Choral masterpiece with local rising stars
Bach's St Matthew Passion re-scheduled concert
Sheffield Bach Society has been proud to present the St Matthew Passion regularly during the course of its distinguished history since the choir’s foundation in 1950. Again, in 2018, members of the audience will be involved in the singing of the Chorale Hymns throughout.
Accompaniment in will, as in 2011 and 2015, be provided by the famous and acclaimed National Festival Orchestra led by Sally Robinson with Alan Horsey at the keyboard. The Bach Choir is joined by members of St Peter’s Singers of Leeds and participants in the increasingly popular Sheffield Voice Exchange. Once again, Sheffield Bach Society is delighted to be able to welcome the gifted young choristers from the Parish Church of St John, Ranmoor, to participate in part one of the St Matthew Passion under the leadership of Edward Barbieri, Director of Music at St John’s.
This concert is being sponsored by the family of the late John Dethick, a former Bach Choir President and by our current Chairman, Chris Walker, in memory of his father, Geoffrey.
We have assembled a superb panoply of star soloists including two, now based in London, who received their earliest musical training in the City of Steel – Ella Taylor soprano and mezzo soprano Anna Harvey. We welcome back Stephen Liley as the Evangelist and Thomas Hunt as Christ. The bass arias and the role of the Governor, Pontius Pilate, will be taken by Quentin Brown and Stephen Liley, additional to his Evangelist role, will sing the tenor arias.
