Donna and her Mobile - a (nearly) brand new opera
Opera turned on its head - a story of social media posts going disasterously wrong!
LA DONNA È MOBILE or DONNA AND HER MOBILE
by Sheffield City Opera
Musical Director: Robert Webb; Director: Matthew Palfreyman
Sheffield City Opera reprise their ground-breaking opera mash from last year.
This time it’s staged in the happening surroundings of the Yellow Arch Studios, complete with real bar. It’s a natural setting for SCO’s edgy contemporary piece.
Donna and Joe are in love. Enter local glitterati couple, Des and Norma. A jaded Des has set his sights on the dewy Donna. Meanwhile an indifferent Joe piques the interest of Norma - Des’s bored trophy wife. None shall sleep until Des and Norma achieve their desires.
Thoughtless partygoers at Des’s Bar may or may not be linked with mobile phone postings that instantly go viral on social media. A tsunami of trouble follows for Joe and Donna. Soon, Donna’s loving father, Arthur gets involved, putting himself in mortal danger.
The action mainly takes place in Des’s Bar. Amongst the partygoers are a group of mobile-toting women – edgy sisters bent on bother. They resent Des and Norma. It’s a traditional tale of heroes, villains and thwarted love.
However the real star of the show here is the mobile phone.
New words and new settings transform familiar operatic arias and choruses. Listen as opera favourites spark in new ways in this ground-breaking opera mash.
