Warm, evocative, sensual… arresting, daring, forward-looking.

Warm, evocative, sensual… arresting, daring, forward-looking.The music of Ravel and Debussy is all these things and more. Over one weekend in March, Ensemble 360, Catrin Finch and guests present the complete chamber music of these two radical and inspirational composers as part of our Festival of Chamber Music and Song from France’s Golden Age, presented in collaboration with University of Sheffield Concerts.

Although Debussy only wrote a single quartet, we can be grateful that it’s a wondrous piece, especially loved for its sensuous beauty and iridescent harmonies. In Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro, the opening wind and strings duos, followed closely by rippling harp, launch what could almost be a ‘manifesto of impressionism’ in music. Glorious.

Programme

  • Debussy: Syrinx for solo flute
  • Ravel: Sonatine (arr. for flute, viola and harp)
  • Debussy: Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp
  • Debussy: String Quartet
  • Ravel: Introduction and Allegro for harp, flute, clarinet and string quartet
