Meet the musicians 3: Poetry
Romantic ideals lie at the heart of this programme. Berlioz's Harold in Italy was inspired by Lord Byron's poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; such was Liszt's passionate admiration for the work that, despite misgivings, Berlioz allowed him to prepare this transcription. Schumann's lyrical first string quartet reflects the fascination for literature he shared with so many artists and musicians of his generation.
