Bach St John Passion
Bach's majestic passion in the wonderful cathedral acoustic
Judged by any yardstick, Bach’s Passion Settings have to be ranked as amongst the greatest musical works ever written. The St John Passion of 1723 is an intensely dramatic work scored for single chorus and orchestra. It is presented every three years by Sheffield Bach Choir and the National Festival Orchestra, who along with the soloists know and love the work very well.
Sheffield audiences will be pleased to welcome back Stephen Liley as the Evangelist and Thomas Hunt as Christ, a partnership with extensive experience of presenting these roles in Sheffield and beyond. The depth of pathos and emotional feeling within this work is extraordinary, and anyone keen to hear a choral classic composed by Bach at his best should come along to experience it.
Here at Sheffield Cathedral the Bach Choir's custom has been to give the whole work in full, without cuts and including audience/congregational participation in the singing of the greatly loved chorale hymns.
