Lunchtime concert
Brahms’s Cello Sonata No.2 is arguably among the most beautiful works ever written for the instrument and widely regarded as a high point in late 19th century chamber music. It’s passionate, fiery and at times lamenting, with a joyously warm ending.
Joseph Joachim is best-known as the most gifted and celebrated violinist of the second half of the 19th century, but these Variations reveal that he was also a highly engaging and skilful composer.
