A programme of songs from 150 years ago

In 1869 many families would have spent their evenings round the piano singing songs from Schubert to popular ballads of the day. This celebratory programme will reflect the era with a handful of songs by the Norwegian Edvard Grieg and the opening song of Berlioz’s cycle Les nuits d’ete: Berlioz died in 1869. There’s no Place Like Home would have been popular, as would Drink to Me Only. Parry was a young man in 1869 and his setting of Christina Rossetti’s My Heart is Like a Singing Bird was hot off the press.

Performers

Elizabeth Charlesworth (soprano) and Hugh Finnigan (piano)

  • I Love Thee
