Passionate and tempestuous early 20th century pieces by Elgar and Janacek, alongside a short work by contemporary composer Thomas Ades

Elgar’s Piano Quintet is considered by many to be his greatest chamber music work. It is said to have been inspired by legends of Spanish monks struck by lightning while conducting sacrilegious activities in the Sussex countryside. Thomas Adès’s brief 'Court Studies', from his opera 'The Tempest', are a great companion to Janáček’s 'Kreutzer Sonata', which is also tempestuous. Its propulsive rhythms and speech-like melodies express pathos and ecstasy through an amazing and unexpected collective string sound.

This concert is dedicated to James Kellie, a generous supporter of Music in the Round for many years.
