Orchestral favourites and an exciting new work!

The Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra are thrilled to present their Spring season concert, which should have a bit of something for everyone!

They will be joined by the young piano prodigy, Thomas Kelly to perform Shostakovich's mighty Second Piano Concerto. Born in 1998, Thomas has been playing the piano since the age of 3 and is currently in his second year of study at the Royal College of Music. He attained a Grade 8 with distinction at the age of 8, winning 'Kent Musician of the Year' in the same year. A Purcell School alumnus, Thomas has already performed in major performance venues such as the Wigmore Hall, St Martin in the Fields and the Fazioli Hall in Sacile. In 2017 he won the Purcell Concerto prize playing Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto, and the jury finalist prize in the Pianale International Competition senior category.

The Phil' are also bringing you a new work by Sheffield-based composer, Tom James - Mad Meg. Mad Meg is an orchestral overture based on the Breugel painting of the same name from 1563. It’s a bold and driving piece incorporating material from thee other works of the time - Orlando di Lasso’s Media Vita (In the midst of life we are in death), a song published by Tylmann Susato Een meysken eens voerby passeerde (A maiden once passed by) and a bagpipe dance from Hoboken in Belgium. All in 8 minutes!!

To round everything off they will play Beethoven's explosive Symphony No. 1 rounding off what will be a very exhilarating evening of music!
