Greatness
Ensemble 360 perform two of Beethoven's greatest string quartets in celebration of his 250th anniversary.
Beethoven’s late quartets represent the pinnacle of classical chamber music and are described by Robert Schumann as “standing on the boundary of all that has been attained by human art and imagination”. The Op.127 Quartet in E flat is instantly approachable and features a beautiful set of variations that are soothing and mysterious. The Quartet in C sharp minor, said to be the composer’s own favourite, is an intriguing work that illustrates perfectly why Beethoven stands out from his contemporaries.
“I have never thought of writing for reputation and honour. What I have in my heart must out: that is the reason why I compose.” Ludwig van Beethoven
