The Brigantes play Jazz - including Gershwin's iconic Rhapsody in Blue and Variations for Piano & Orchestra on 'I Got Rhythm'

Who could forget the sound of that clarinet gliding up to its bluesy top notes? So begins Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the first fusion of classical music and jazz, and the centrepiece of this approachable and fun programme.

The undiscovered gem is a performance of the Afro-American Symphony by William Grant Still, the first symphony written by an African American, full of jazz harmony, and until the 1950s the most widely performed symphony composed by an American.

  • Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue & "I Got Rhythm" Variations
  • WIlliam Grant Still: Afro-American Symphony
