Lunchtime concert celebrating Beethoven's 250th anniversary

At the height of his career Luigi Cherubini was the toast of Parisian society, and was considered by Beethoven to be the greatest living composer, but with the advent of the French Revolution his reputation faded. His instinct for a vocal line shines through in these two sonatas, with florid writing that shows off the singing qualities of the horn. Beethoven’s Quartet in F is an expansive work, described as blending the “majesty and energy of the Eroica Symphony with the serenity of the Violin Concerto”.

Programme

  • CHERUBINI: Two Sonatas for horn and strings
