Music inspired by twilight, evening and night to round off the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra's 74th concert season
Britten’s sparkling orchestral suite Soirées Musicales, based on Themes by Rossini, gets the evening off to a toe-tapping beginning before we perform Elgar’s somewhat more-calm Chanson de Nuit.
Lili Boulanger, the sister of celebrated French composer and pedagogue Nadia Boulanger, completed her sensational D’un Soir Triste only months before her tragic death at the age of just 24. It was, in fact, the last piece of music that Boulanger was able to score by hand, with the writing on the manuscript becomes ever weaker and more indistinct until it’s difficult to make out the notes.
Elgar’s explosive First Symphony was written when he was an already world-famous 51-year-old and was instantly an international hit– the perfect piece to round off our season!
