Thanks to Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, we think of Antonio Salieri as Mozart's embittered rival but there is no evidence that he drove Mozart to an early grave. It's true that his output rarely reaches the same heights as Mozart's but some of it is original and inventive and well worth listening to. His De profundis is a little gem and tonight we pair it with his Requiem, regarded as his major work. Although written in 1804, it did not receive its premiere until 1825, as part of the composer's funeral! On a more cheerful note, we also perform two of Handel's Coronation anthems and our Associate Soloist, music student Sarah Leffler, will be singing several solo items from her final-year recital.
