The Brigantes' New World
Dvořák's evocative New World Symphony and the Elgar Cello Concerto accompany Sir Malcolm Sargent's colourful tone-poem, "An Impression on a Windy Day"
When Malcolm Sargent presented his composition, "An Impression on a Windy Day" to Sir Henry Wood for the 1921 London Promenade Concerts, the maestro insisted the young man conduct it himself. So began a long and illustrious career for Sargent as a conductor, not least in following in Wood's footsteps to lead the Proms in 1948. That he and the great cellist, Jaqueline Du Pré performed the Elgar Concerto together on numerous occasions makes a fitting combination for this concert which is neatly finished with Dvořák's Symphony "from the New World".
