Sheffield International Concert Season 2021/2022

Under the direction of its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Sergey Smbatyan, the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra will open this concert with music by native countryman Aram Khachaturian. The Suite was put together by the composer himself and this concert features three of the five movements, including the famous Waltz.

Although Beethoven might not have approved of the title ‘Emperor’ it certainly does justice to the stature of his magnificent Fifth Piano Concerto, performed here by one of today’s most successful pianists, the exceptionally gifted Freddy Kempf. The concert will draw to a close with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony: a work in which the composer translated the complexities of his personal life, driven he believed by Fate, into music of riveting force and culminating in a blaze of joyful celebration
