Rossini Petite Messe Solenelle
One of Rossini's finest and most entertaining choral works
The Sterndale Singers join with Bel Canto Choir South Yorkshire to bring you a performance of one of Rossini's best loved works - his Petite Messe Solenelle.
Rossini himself described this mass setting as "one of the sins of my old age". Neither petite or particularly solemn, this work is, on the whole, a joyful, exuberent setting, with moments of pure beauty. Drawing on his operatic expertise, Rossini has created a piece with is not only a delight to sing, but also to listen to. It is also the only major work in the repertoire to be accompanied by piano and harmonium - a curiosity in itself!
The two choirs are joined by four top-class soloists for this performance, which is being repeated in St Margaret's Chuch, Swinton on Sunday 6th at 3.00pm
Performers
Sterndale Singers, Robert Webb (Conductor), Clare Wheat (Soprano), Joanna Gamble (Alto), David Watkin Holmes (Tenor), Charles Cunliffe (Bass), Jonathan Gooing (Piano), Ruth Milsom (Harmonium) and Bel Canto Choir (Choir)
