World of Music - Chinese Zithers!

CHINESE ZITHERS!

Shu Jiang performs traditional Chinese music on the zheng and qin for 0-5 year-olds and their grown-ups. Complete the experience by staying for authentic Szechuan cuisine from China Red at Cutlery Works!

With songs, dancing, listening as well as bubbles, percussion, props and informal introductions, this is a fun and informal gig for adults and their 0-5 year-old children.

Shu Jiang is an ethnomusicologist and expert player of Chinese zithers (zheng and qin) with a special interest in the music of China. From a family of folk musicians, she learned to play Chinese zithers - the 21-stringed zheng and 7-stringed qin - in her childhood. After graduating from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, she was appointed full-time lecturer in Music at the Department of Music, Xiamen University. She came to Sheffield in 2005 to pursue postgraduate study. She is now an honorary research fellow at the Department of Music, University of Sheffield and a teaching affiliate at the Department of Music, University of Nottingham. She has a particular interest in the cross-cultural exchange of East Asian music in the context of Western music and works alongside a range of composers and world musicians in the UK.
