Under the direction of its new Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Olari Elts, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra opens the evening with compatriot Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, a work for strings and bell that is rich in liturgical overtones. A firm favourite with Sheffield audiences, Freddy Kempf, described as “… a pianist in a million” (The Arts Desk) returns to perform Rachmaninov’s Third, and most technically challenging, Piano Concerto. Thea Musgrave’s Song of the Enchanter is an homage to Sibelius, written to honour the 125th anniversary of the Finnish composer’s birth and a perfect pairing for his Fifth Symphony, a masterpiece that concludes with one of classical music’s most theatrical and triumphant finales.
