Romantic music for piano trio

Lucy and Jonny team up with Andrew Marples, pianist and founder of the Chesterfield Library concert series. The trio will perform works by Clara Schumann and Sergei Rachmaninov.

Clara Schumann's Piano Trio in G minor was premiered in 1846 in Leipzig and was very well received at the time, with reviewers praising her 'calm mastery of formal techniques' and describing it as a masterpiece.

To celebrate Rachmaninov's 150th birthday, the second piece in this concert is his first Trio élégiaque, written when he was 18 and in only four days. Rachmaninov performed it less than two weeks later, alongside music by Chopin, Liszt and Tchaikovsky, as he made his official debut in Moscow. The single-movement work is dominated by a repeated four-note motif and has many similarities to the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Trio in A minor.

Entry to the concert is free and doors open at 11am. There will be a retiring collection.

Programme

  • Clara Schumann: Piano Trio in G minor op. 17
