Songs of Home
Inspired by Schumann's In der Fremde we explore songs from various composers nostalgic for their homeland
After summer travels it's good to remember the good things of home - wherever home may be. The opening of Schumann's Liederkreis (song cycle) sets the scene and the mood with longing thoughts of a home where no-one knows him any more. Arnold Bax was drawn to near-contemporary poets and through their eyes paints vivid pictures of remembered family gatherings and familiar landscapes. Ivor Gurney takes us to the despair of the Flanders trenches while he served there is 1917. the Neapolitan composer de Curtis dominates the closing of the concert with nostalgia and longing for loved ones. Jonathan and I have enjoyed putting this programme together which is varied in music and sentiment and - we hope - enjoyable for you the audience as much as it is for us
