SUMMARY:Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus: Young Composer Competition concert
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 24 April 2027\, 19.30\, St Marie’s cathedral\, \nYoung Composer Competition concert\n  \nA special concert to present the world premiere of the winning composition in the third Stella Jockel Young Composer Competition organised by the Chorus. The concert will include other wonderful choral works in the superb acoustic of St Marie’s cathedral. \nComments from the previous concert in St Marie’s: \n\n“I enjoyed all the pieces (and all were new to me)… It wasn’t really the individual pieces\, for me\, though. It was the all-encompassing sounds of dozens of voices in rhythm and harmony\, plus that magnificent organ\, filling such an acoustic space.” audience member\n“The choir was on top form.” audience member\n“I loved the unusual sounds [the] voices made in the Seven Stars piece – really compelling.” audience member\n“My highlight was the superbly dramatic Hymne au Soleil. Brilliantly varied programming.” audience member\n“I’m not sure I’d have listened properly to that extraordinary Langlais mass if it’d come on the radio\, but hearing it live\, sung with such commitment and energy\, made for a great all-encompassing encounter which reminds you why the live experience is so essential.” audience member\n“Really interesting choice of repertoire\, done well.” James Mitchell\, organist\n“You made a fantastic sound. All credit to Darius for choosing such fantastic rarely-performed repertoire\, perfect for the space and to show off our Lewis organ. You made the most of the opportunity to sing in the best acoustic in Sheffield.” Robert Webb\, Music Director of St Marie’s Cathedral

DESCRIPTION:Saturday 19th June 2027 at 19.30   Victoria Hall\, Sheffield\nThe season ends with a joint performance of Elgar’s masterpiece with Sheffield Oratorio Chorus\, conducted by Philip Collin. \nSet to a poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman\, it tracks the spiritual journey of an ordinary man’s soul from his deathbed\, past judgment by God\, and into Purgatory. \n Elgar imagined Gerontius to be an ordinary man. “Therefore\, I’ve not filled his part with Church tunes and rubbish but a good\, healthy full-blooded romantic\, remembered worldliness.” The result is full of drama and some of Elgar’s most touching music\, from the hushed opening to the sublime ‘Angel’s Farewell’. \n‘This is the best of me”\, wrote Elgar ‘This\, if anything of mine\, is worth your memory.” \n“bright and well balanced sound throughout” “tremendous.” Tom Owen\, Sheffield Telegraph following a previous concert by Sheffield Bach Choir \n\nSheffield Bach Choir and Sheffield Oratorio Chorus\nNational Festival orchestra\nKatie Symonds-Joy – mezzo soprano\nPeter Davoren – tenor\nbass/baritone to be announced\nPhilip Collin – conductor\n\nTickets will be available online and on the door\, price to be determined. SUMMARY:Brigantes Missing Pieces
DESCRIPTION:SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8\nMOZART Requiem \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nOur journey ends with a year that stays in the memory of musicians as the year of Mozart’s death – 1791. His unfinished Requiem is played alongside another iconic\, unfinished work\, the 8th Symphony of Franz Schubert. Completed by later hands\, both pieces remain powerful\, moving and deeply human\, reminding us that great music can outlive its moment and continue speaking across generations. \nThe Brigantes Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Quentin Clare with Sarah Helsby Hughes (soprano)\, Nicola Wemyss (mezzo-soprano)\, David Watkin-Holmes (tenor) & Matthew Baker (baritone).
