SUMMARY:The Hallé – Imogen Cooper performs Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Hallé award-winning conductor Euan Shields is joined by Dame Imogen Cooper to perform Mozart’s final piano concerto. Written in striking contrast to his other concertos\, Mozart’s 27th Piano Concerto\, full of richness and lyricism\, is scored for a relatively small orchestra. Nevertheless\, it is still packed with the charm and beauty so characteristic of the composer’s other works. \nBeginning proceedings is Stravinsky’s Song of the Nightingale – an effective musical illustration of both real and mechanical birdsong. Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony\, dubbed “Little Russian” thanks to its effective use of Ukrainian folksongs\, provides a joyful end to the evening. \nEuan Shields conductor\nImogen Cooper piano \nSTRAVINSKY Song of the Nightingale (21)\nMOZART Piano Concerto No.27\, K595 (32)\nTCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.2 “Little Russian” (32)

SUMMARY:STRINGS AND ORGAN - West Riding Ensemble String Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Here WRE brings together professional players and students of artistic director David Milsom in a string orchestra tour de force\, featuring two concerti\, and one of the most celebrated British string orchestra compositions. \nVaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis stands as a pinnacle of a peculiarly British association with the string orchestra as an ensemble\, and is paired in this programme with the poignant Romance for string orchestra by Gerald Finzi. \nA total melodic and harmonic contrast is provided by Poulenc’s electrifying\, modernist Organ Concerto\, in spite of a gap in time of only 28 years after the Vaughan Williams Fantasia. This work (which also includes timpani) sees St Marie’s Cathedral’s Director of Music and organist Robert Webb as soloist on the fine\, restored but unmodernised three-manual Lewis organ\, which is in its 150th anniversary year. \nThe focal point for WRE founders David Milsom and Maria Nikolaeva is performing the world premiere of Vermeer Music\, a work written by Ian Crew for them as violin soloists with a string ensemble. The work uses Baroque forms\, including divisions (florid variations)\, and a fugato\, separating the players into ‘concertino’ (soloists) and ‘ripieno’ (ensemble) in the tradition of the Baroque concerto grosso. The work acts as a deep contemplation of the musical relationship of the two soloists\, initially as student and teacher\, but increasingly as colleagues and collaborators\, brought together with the inspiration of several paintings by the Dutch artist\, Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). This makes for a complex\, interwoven texture which links to perfection WRE’s union of scholarship\, performance passion\, and pedagogy. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, the string ensemble includes a number of students. WRE is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to give a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model\, and pays students a fair fee for their work. \nPROGRAMME\nCREW: Vermeer Music Concerto Grosso for two solo violins and string orchestra (2026)\nPOULENC: Organ Concerto (1938)\nVAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis (1910)\nFINZI: Romance (1928) \nPERFORMERS\nDavid Milsom & Maria Nikolaeva – solo violins\nRobert Webb – organ\nWRE String Orchestra\nConductors: Ian Crew\, John Lyon\, and Wilf Dingle

SUMMARY:Manchester Camerata – Mozart Symphony No.40
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Camerata with conductor Tom Featherstonhaugh are joined by Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus for a journey through various sonic landscapes.\nHannah Roberts\, acclaimed Principal Cellist\, will open the programme with the breathtaking Prelude from Bach’s spell-binding Cello Suite. From one solitary performer\, the sound world shifts as the combined forces of orchestra and chorus come together for a rare opportunity to hear Arvo Pärt’s Adam’s Lament\, a work of deep contemplation. Profoundly affected by the death of Benjamin Britten in 1976\, the respect and admiration Pärt felt towards the composer can be heard in the ethereal beauty of his elegiac orchestral piece\, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten. Mozart’s timeless Symphony No.40\, with its passion and urgency\, will ignite the orchestra for an electrifying and energetic conclusion. \nTom Fetherstonhaugh conductor\nHannah Roberts cello \nJ.S BACH Solo Cello Suite No.5: I. SUMMARY:The Hallé with Kahchun Wong
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed cellist Rachel Helleur-Simcock joins the Hallé’s Principal Conductor\, Kahchun Wong\, in this emotive opening to the 2025/26 Sheffield International Concert Season. \nRachel is the newly announced section leader Cello for the Hallé\, previously having been a key member of The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for the past 16 years\, and makes her Sheffield debut in this concert to play Elgar’s deeply emotional Cello Concerto\, a cornerstone of the instrument’s repertoire and\, famously\, the composer’s last completed work. Written in the aftermath of World War One\, it is a poignant work – never more so than in the heart-rending Adagio third movement – yet\, despite this\, there are still moments of that recognisable Elgarian nobility as well as hope. It remains amongst the composer’s most celebrated and well-loved works. \nIn striking contrast\, the concerto is framed by Shostakovich’s Festive Overture and Rachmaninov’s exuberant Symphony No.2. With its grandiose brass fanfare opening\, full of cymbal crashes\, the Festive Overture makes for a celebratory start to the Sheffield International Concert Season. \nKahchun Wong conductor\nRachel Helleur-Simcock cello \nSHOSTAKOVICH Festive Overture (7)\nELGAR Cello Concerto (30)\nInterval\nRACHMANINOV Symphony No.2 (60)
