SUMMARY:WRE SALON | TRANSITION - West Riding Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:If we look for a transitional figure between ‘classical’ and ‘romantic’ styles\, Beethoven (1770-1827) is often picked by default\, while Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-91) tends to be regarded as a prime – and exquisitely skilful – exponent of the pure classical style. But this belies the innovation within much of Mozart’s music. \nAs with our pairing last season of Mozart’s 40th symphony and Mendelssohn’s famous violin concerto\, in this concert we explore how Mozart touches on the kind of elegiac\, lyrical romanticisms found throughout music of the nineteenth century. Following our performances of the clarinet quintet earlier this year\, we also delve again into Mozart’s fascination with the clarinet\, which transformed it into a fully-fledged solo\, chamber\, and orchestral voice. His ‘Dissonance’ quartet also pre-figures elements of increasing complexity in nineteenth-century German and Austrian composition\, especially in its highly chromatic opening. \nWritten just over a century on from the Mozart works\, we have the opus 1 quartet for violin\, clarinet\, cello and piano – the instrumentation perhaps most famously used by Olivier Messiaen in his Quatuor pour la fin du temps (1941) – by Viennese composer Walter Rabl (1873-1940). Rabl is a minor and quite obscure figure\, but this work of 1896\, which won Brahms’ endorsement\, is ‘transitional’ in that it represented a fast-disappearing ancien-regime of classically-rooted style and composition in Vienna\, soon to be dominated by the more progressive tendencies of Gustav Mahler\, Richard Strauss\, Erich Korngold\, and others\, whom Rabl himself championed as a conductor. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, this concert gives a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model. \nPROGRAMME\nMOZART: Trio K498 ‘Kegelstatt’ (c.21′)\nMOZART: String Quartet K465 ‘Dissonance’ (c.30′)\nRABL: Quartet op. 1 for piano\, violin\, clarinet\, and cello (c.26′) \nPERFORMERS\nDavid Milsom\, violin & viola\nLiza Costanzo\, violin\nCharlotte Kenyon\, viola\nTom Collingwood\, cello\nSofia Nikolaeva\, clarinet\nJonathan Gooing\, piano\nRuth Milsom\, piano

Described by BBC Music Magazine as a “trumpeter extraordinaire\,” and celebrated for her impeccable sound\, crystalline phrasing\, and exquisite control\, Matilda Lloyd holds audiences spellbound through virtuosity and expressive power. \nThis brassy concert from Music in the Round celebrates the brilliant sounds of the trumpet and its central place in American chamber music drawing on diverse traditions stretching back to Haydn. \nCopland’s Quiet City is a portrait of the American night: a solitary walker and a bridge in fog. Beach’s Romance captures the elegance of the Boston salon\, while Gershwin’s Three Preludes and whimsical Promenade encapsulate the moment jazz and European music collided\, and a continent found its unique musical voice.

SUMMARY:VIVALDI'S FOUR SEASONS AND THE LARK ASCENDING
DESCRIPTION:Programme to include: \nMozart – Overture to The Marriage of Figaro\nVaughan Williams – The Lark Ascending\nMozart – Flute Quartet in D\nVivaldi – The Four Seasons \nARTISTS\nEmmanuel Webb\nSoloist \nABOUT\nExperience breathtaking music by some of classical music’s greatest composers\, performed by some of the country’s finest classical musicians\, all presented in stunning candlelight. \nAt the heart of the concert is Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons\, the most recorded work in classical music and a defining showpiece for solo violin. Each concerto depicts a different season\, shaped by accompanying poems – possibly written by Vivaldi himself. Across the four concertos\, Vivaldi transforms the natural world into vivid musical scenes\, evoking birdsong and buzzing flies\, harvest celebrations\, drunken revellers\, barking dogs\, summer storms and winter ice. \nAlongside this\, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending\, composed on the eve of the First World War\, offers a more reflective perspective. Inspired by George Meredith’s poem\, it captures a pastoral world on the brink of change\, its soaring violin line suggesting a lark gliding high above the mechanised world below\, “lost on his aerial rings / In light\, and then the fancy sings.” \nOpening the programme we have Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro\, an opera drawn from Beaumarchais’ recently banned comedy\, in which a philandering count attempts to seduce his servant’s fiancée\, only to be outmanoeuvred by the servants and his own long-suffering wife. \nWhether you’re already in the know or completely new to classical music\, this is a programme to be enjoyed by all.

DESCRIPTION:BOCCHERINI Oboe Quintet in D minor (10’)\nMOZART Adagio for Glass Harmonica (5’)\nBOLOGNE Sonata No.1 in B flat for 2 Violins (10’)\nHAYDN Flute Quartet No.1 in D (15’)\nSÜSSMAYR Quintet for flute\, oboe\, violin\, viola and cello in D (18’)\nMOZART Quintet for glass harmonica\, flute\, oboe\, viola and cello (15’) \nCelebrate Mozart and his lively circle of friends with Ensemble 360 and Music in the Round in a delightful evening of music for winds and strings\, including two works showcasing the unworldly sound of the glass harmonica. \nThis remarkable instrument has an ethereal\, angelic tone\, which fascinated and inspired Mozart. Rarely-played today\, the instrument was invented by Benjamin Franklin and was popular in the 18th century. Its sound is created by the player moistening their fingers with water and gently touching the glass bowls rotating on a horizontal spindle. \nMusic from Mozart’s friends include a sonata full of wit\, virtuosity\, and graceful charm by Joseph Bologne\, a swordsman and pioneering composer who was\, briefly\, Mozart’s neighbour in Paris; and a bright\, elegant quintet by Franz Xaver Süssmayr\, who famously completed Mozart’s unfinished Requiem following the composer’s death.

SUMMARY:Bradfield Festival of Music 2026 : Tim Kliphuis Trio
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Bradfield Festival of Music features a week of wonderful concerts performed by highly sought artists in the magical setting of St Nicholas’ Church\, High Bradfield with its superb acoustic and fantastic views across Bradfield Dale. \nAward-winning Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis has created a brand new style that embraces classical\, gypsy jazz and folk. Hailed as a ‘current-day improvising Paganini’\, his inclusive and innovative approach to music has united audiences and is influencing a new generation of string players. \nThis year – the 20th year of touring with his trio – Tim will be presenting a brand-new\, virtuosic interpretation of George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ that swings\, grooves and dazzles. With their trademark high-octane sound\, the three play the role of orchestra and soloist\, bringing back the free-flowing improvisational energy that Gershwin’s timeless melodies deserve. \nPaired with the ‘Rhapsody’ is the Trio’s popular arrangement ‘Hoedown for the Common Man’\, as performed with orchestras across the world\, that celebrates the music of yet another legendary American composer: Aaron Copland. To top this exciting programme off\, the Trio play some Gershwin gems: ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’\, ‘I Got Rhythm’ and ‘They Can’t Take That Away from Me’ in a solo guitar version. \nMore details on the Festival website. \nOnline ticket sales are available at https://bradfieldfestivalofmusic.littleboxoffice.com/browse from 1st March 2026. \nFor other booking options (by post\, over-the-counter\, telephone) and patron tickets for the whole festival\, please see the Festival website.
