SUMMARY:Mahler\, Farrenc\, and Bottesini
DESCRIPTION:From the first dramatic notes of Louise Farrenc’s sparkling Overture No. 2\, this concert celebrates orchestral colour\, virtuosity and emotional power on a grand scale. \nOne of the most significant French women composers of the 19th century\, Farrenc combines classical elegance with the energy and drama of early Romanticism in an overture that deserves to be heard far more often. Then comes a concert rarity; while violin and piano concertos are familiar favourites\, opportunities to hear a double bass concerto live are few and far between. Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to welcome rising star\, Nathan Knight as soloist in Giovanni Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2 – a dazzling showpiece by the legendary “Paganini of the Double Bass” – the concerto combines technical brilliance with lyrical\, operatic beauty. \nThe second half is devoted to Mahler’s monumental Fifth Symphony. From its famous opening trumpet fanfare and funeral march to the radiant final pages\, the work charts an extraordinary emotional journey. At its heart lies the much-loved Adagietto\, one of the most beautiful movements in the orchestral repertoire\, before the symphony concludes in a blaze of energy and triumph. More than a century after its premiere\, Mahler’s Fifth remains one of the most exhilarating and rewarding achievements in symphonic music.

SUMMARY:Sheffield International Concert Season 26/27 - Stuttgart Philharmonic
DESCRIPTION:The Stuttgart Philharmonic\, here making its debut\, is joined by Mariano Chiacchiarini\, one of the most compelling conductors of his generation. Come and discover\, or simply immerse yourself in\, some familiar classics in this hugely evocative concert\, starting with Mendelsson’s striking overture. The composer sketched its opening theme on a postcard whilst visiting the echoing sea cave on Staffa and the final work perfectly captures the moody atmosphere of the Scottish seascape. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony is a musical depiction of an unfolding landscape; from the swooping horn calls of its opening\, conjuring a slow sunrise over the vast Nordic horizon\, to its theatrical ending with six massive chords\, separated by silence. Performing one of Mozart’s most celebrated piano concertos is Jeneba Kanneh-Mason\, who makes a welcome return to Sheffield.

SUMMARY:Brigantes Bach to Britten
DESCRIPTION:BRITTEN Sinfonietta Op. 1\nBACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D\nBACH Triple Concerto BWV1044\nSTRAVINSKY Dumbarton Oaks Concerto\nAlice Power (Piano)\, Laura Jellicoe (Flute)\, David Milsom (Violin) \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nImagine composers in the first decades of the 1900s revisiting the music of JS Bach\, what might they have written? Well\, Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks Concerto is\, in all but name\, another Brandenburg Concerto\, but with a distinctly modern voice. Each piece in this programme\, the Britten Sinfonietta\, the Stravinsky\, and two pieces by Bach\, exploit small forces and make soloists of the orchestral musicians.
