SUMMARY:CSYO Spring Concert: Music for A Great City
DESCRIPTION:Fanfare for the Common Man – Aaron Copland\nMusic for a Great City – Aaron Copland\nViolin Concerto in D – Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (soloist Martin Cropper) \nLink to tickets: https://www.trybooking.com/uk/GDLF \nJoin our city’s talented young musicians as they perform Copland’s celebratory music dedicated to the London Symphony Orchestra and the great city of London\, though almost certainly inspired by the great city of New York. This exciting piece will highlight our incredible wind\, brass and percussion sections in a sonic depiction of a bustling\, modern metropolis. Come on a journey with the orchestra through the sights and sounds of this moody city. \nOur brass and percussion will herald the start of the concert with Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man\, a piece that honours the ordinary citizen with its soaring melody and profound sense of dignity and strength. \nIn contrast\, the strings will be at centre stage for Tchaikosvky’s lyrical and passionate Violin Concerto in D. We are delighted that local musical celebrity and our very own\, inspirational violin tutor\, Martin Cropper\, will be bringing his own passion and virtuosity to this performance. No one can write a melody so well as Tchaikovsky\, and this favourite of the repertoire offers a real treat for the soloist\, orchestra and audience alike\, with its rich\, passionate soundscape\, bridging deep Slavic melancholy with vibrant Cossack-dance energy. \nThe City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra is one of the UK’s leading independent youth orchestras. CSYO provides valuable orchestral and musical training for young musicians of the region between 13 and 21. \nCSYO is a unique youth orchestra\, offering membership to students up to the age of 21. Many of our older students are at college or university\, training to be professional musicians. But we also have many students studying other subjects who want to keep performing at a high level. And we have plenty turning 22 who don’t want to leave!

SUMMARY:The Hallé – Walton Symphony No.1
DESCRIPTION:Alpesh Chauhan\, an inspiring conductor with a glittering career\, opens the Hallé’s fourth appearance with Britten’s lively “Courtly Dances” from his opera Gloriana. Norwegian trumpet star\, Tine Thing Helseth\, then takes to the platform to perform a new and exciting work\, written especially for her. Nico Muhly’s Doom Painting leads us on a dramatic\, musical journey\, illustrating the biblical role of the trumpet: from ceremonial object for rituals and celebrations alike\, to the harbinger of Doomsday and the jubilant instrument of the psalms. “Her ability to transform the brassy trumpet sound into something soft\, supple\, lyrical and delectable needs to be heard to be believed” (The Evening Standard). \nWalton’s First Symphony\, widely considered amongst the greatest 20th century symphonies\, is sometimes triumphant\, sometimes menacingly hostile – the second movement is subtitled “Presto con malizia” (“quickly with malice”). Expect emotional intensity from start to finish! \nAlpesh Chauhan conductor\nTine Thing Helseth trumpet \nBRITTEN Gloriana: Courtly Dances (9)\nNICO MUHLY Doom Painting (25)\nInterval\nWALTON Symphony No.1 (43)

ORGANIZER;CN="Sheffield Symphony Orchestra":MAILTO:For Potential Players The SSO takes pride in the friendliness and supportive attitude between players. We believe this is why members have such long-standing loyalty and commitment to the orchestra. However, our membership does need to remain large enough to present the extensive repertoire we offer. In particular, we are looking to recruit more string players, especially violin and viola players of all ages. If you are interested, you can come along to a mutual trial period to see if it feels right. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from early September to late June, except during school holidays. To develop our orchestral sound, we plan to have day schools this season. This will be combined with social occasions to foster the orchestral camaraderie. We play to a high standard so players are expected to be a minimum level of grade 7 and usually around grade 8 or above. If the SSO’s description seems to match what you are looking for and you are curious, don’t hesitate to contact us via the website or Facebook, tweet us on Twitter, or call 07901 566960 to find out more.

SUMMARY:Manchester Camerata – Mozart Symphony No.40
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Camerata with conductor Tom Featherstonhaugh are joined by Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus for a journey through various sonic landscapes.\nHannah Roberts\, acclaimed Principal Cellist\, will open the programme with the breathtaking Prelude from Bach’s spell-binding Cello Suite. From one solitary performer\, the sound world shifts as the combined forces of orchestra and chorus come together for a rare opportunity to hear Arvo Pärt’s Adam’s Lament\, a work of deep contemplation. Profoundly affected by the death of Benjamin Britten in 1976\, the respect and admiration Pärt felt towards the composer can be heard in the ethereal beauty of his elegiac orchestral piece\, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten. Mozart’s timeless Symphony No.40\, with its passion and urgency\, will ignite the orchestra for an electrifying and energetic conclusion. \nTom Fetherstonhaugh conductor\nHannah Roberts cello \nJ.S BACH Solo Cello Suite No.5: I. SUMMARY:The Hallé – Grieg Piano Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Lionel Bringuier conductor\nJulius Asal piano \n2025’s astounding winner of the prestigious Terence Judd-Hallé Award\, Julius Asal\, joins forces with returning Hallé conductor Lionel Bringuier for a performance of Grieg’s youthful Piano Concerto. From its thunderous opening timpani roll\, through a heart-stoppingly beautiful Adagio to a rousing final movement\, this stunning work has it all. \nThis Nordic-themed programme opens with Esa-Pekka Salonen’s enigmatic Helix\, described by the composer as a spiralling “nine-minute accelerando”. While the pulse of the piece increases gradually throughout\, the note values get proportionately longer\, creating a fascinating experience for the audience\, where the work seems to simultaneously speed up and slow down. \nSibelius composed his Second Symphony shortly after the successful premiere of Finlandia. The symphony premiered in 1902 to great public admiration\, its rousing finale linked by many to Finland’s struggle for independence. Whether intentionally patriotic or not\, the symphony’s swelling melodic richness makes for a truly moving performance. \nESA-PEKKA SALONEN Helix (9)\nGRIEG Piano Concerto (30)\nSIBELIUS Symphony No.2 (43)
