SUMMARY:Where the Water Flows…
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Chamber Orchestra’s 75th anniversary concert features a collection of works connected with water\, including the world première of Dominic McGonigal: ‘Sunset at Sea’ \nWhere the Water Flows…\nTICKETS: £12.00\, STUDENTS/UNDER 18S £6.00 \nEcclesall Parish Church \nConductor: Laurence Perkins\nLeader: Ralph Dawson \nWe are absolutely delighted to perform for you the world première of a new composition by Dominic McGonigal — ‘Sunset at Sea’. Dominic’s work has been described as having “great textures and a perfect sense of spacing and pacing” and his ‘Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight’ recently won the Palimpsest Competition at Canterbury Cathedral. \nMendelssohn’s overture ‘Die Schöne Melusine’ loosely illustrates a German legend of a Melusine\, or a water-nymph who who marries a Count Raymond\, on the condition that he never enter her room on a Saturday as that is the day she takes on the form of a mermaid!! The opening passages seem to evoke ripples on water\, but in complete contrast you would also be right to conjure up the perfect coffee — the Starbucks logo features a Melusine at its centre. \nTelemann’s Water Music is the common name of an orchestral suite with the full title ‘Hamburger Ebb und Fluth’ (Hamburg’s ebb and flood) reflecting the town’s intimate links with its river Elbe. Despite Hamburg being nearly 100 miles from the coast its river is tidal\, and the overture begins by representing the physical movement of the ocean. There follows several movements with nautical themes including: Thetis\, a sea goddess; Neptune\, a sea god; playful water nymphs; Neptune’s son and sea messenger Triton; as well as one depicting the tides of Hamburg and another its happy sailors. \nWagner composed ‘Siegfried Idyll’ as a Christmas present for for his wife after the birth of their son in 1869. It was originally scored for 13 players\, but Wagner expanded it to 35 when it was published. \nSeascape\, by the English composer Ruth Gipps\, conjures up the beauty as well as the stormy nature of the sea. It is thought to have been inspired by a trip she took to Kent where she was giving lectures; and during her stay in a coastal hotel in Broadstairs she would hear the sea from her bed. The work which has a wonderfully rich rhythmic and percussive central section and was composed in 1958 for an ensemble of ten wind players. \nWilliam Sterndale Bennett was born in Sheffield in the early 19th century — a nice local connection. When you’ve listened to his piece ‘The Naiades Overture’ you’ll understand why he was admired by both Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. Naiades are a type of female spirit or nymph in Greek mythology\, who preside over fountains\, wells\, springs\, streams\, brooks and other bodies of fresh water. \nJohann Strauss II is the famous Strauss and we are performing his water themed waltzes the ‘Nordseebilder’. This was inspired by his visit to the North Frisian island of Föhr. The slow introduction suggests a calm sea scene\, while swirling waves are captured in later themes. The coda incorporates a ‘sea storm’ scene\, with furious chords and fierce brass instruments suggesting the North Sea at the time of a severe gale. \nThe full programme for the evening is: \nMendelssohn: ‘Die Schöne Melusine’ \nWagner: Siegfried Idyll \nTelemann: Water Music \nRuth Gipps: Seascape \nWilliam Sterndale Bennett: The Naiades \nJohann Strauss II: Nordseebilder \nThe world première of Dominic McGonigal: ‘Sunset at Sea’ \nTHIS CONCERT IS SPONSORED BY AGINCARE and TURNER VIOLINS

SUMMARY:The Hallé – Mendelssohn Symphony No.4
DESCRIPTION:Kahchun Wong conductor\nAkiko Suwanai violin \nThe Hallé returns with its dynamic Principal Conductor\, Kahchun Wong\, for his second appearance in the 2025/26 Sheffield season. Here\, he is joined by the violin virtuoso\, Akiko Suwanai\, for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s characterful Violin Concerto. \nAfter winning the International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of just 18\, Akiko Suwanai has gone on to become a violinist of global acclaim and her performance of Tchaikovsky’s popular concerto is sure to be a highlight. Spirited and technically demanding\, the work is a real showcase for the instrument. \nMendelssohn wrote his Fourth Symphony after a trip to Italy in 1830. The work is a series of affectionate musical impressions of the country\, each movement evoking Mediterranean sunshine\, rolling countryside and monumental architecture. The concert begins with Verdi’s powerful overture from his opera\, The Force of Destiny. \nVERDI Overture: The Force of Destiny (8)\nTCHAIKOVSKY Violin Concerto (33)\nMENDELSSOHN Symphony No.4 “Italian” (30)

SUMMARY:Britten ST NICHOLAS and Fauré REQUIEM
DESCRIPTION:Our season begins with Benjamin Britten’s wonderful oratorio Saint Nicolas paired with Gabriel Faure’s beautiful Requiem. Britten’s piece\, completed in 1948 using a text by Eric Crozier\, enhances the drama of the legends and stories relating to the saint’s life\,  using striking contrasts in instrumentation\, vocal style\, and musical textures. \n\nFaure composed his Requiem between 1887 and 1890\, and wrote of the work\, “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem\, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.” \n\nSheffield Bach Choir\nPeter Wilman – tenor\nChoristers from St John’s Church Ranmoor\nPhilip Collin – conductor\n\nTickets are available online (booking fee payable) or you can pay on the door (card or cash). Adults £18\, concessions £16\, students £8 (Student Card required on entry)\, accompanied children free.

SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky\, Howard and Howell
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra as it launches its 80th annual concert series with a vibrant and thrilling programme of music. \nThe concert will open with Dorothy Howell’s last large-scale orchestral work Three Divertissements. Originally written for the 1940 Proms but shelved due to wartime cancellations\, Three Divertissements has remained largely unheard until recent years. This lively and colourful suite is a brilliant rediscovery by a British composer whose music is finally being brought back to the spotlight. \nDani Howard’s Trombone Concerto is a powerful and uplifting response to the challenges of 2020\, written during lockdown as a celebration of human resilience and connection. Across three vivid movements – from quiet introspection to joyful\, high-energy celebration – the solo trombone takes on the role of an individual navigating a complex world\, ultimately emerging with hope and purpose. Expect dazzling virtuosity from soloist Blair Sinclair\, Principal Trombone of Opera North. \nFinally\, immerse yourself in the sweeping drama and rich romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor – a symphonic journey through fate\, passion\, and triumph. This is Tchaikovsky at his most emotionally compelling. \nCelebrate this milestone season with us and experience a night of powerful live music\, unforgettable melodies\, and virtuosic performance.

SUMMARY:The Hallé with Kahchun Wong
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed cellist Rachel Helleur-Simcock joins the Hallé’s Principal Conductor\, Kahchun Wong\, in this emotive opening to the 2025/26 Sheffield International Concert Season. \nRachel is the newly announced section leader Cello for the Hallé\, previously having been a key member of The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for the past 16 years\, and makes her Sheffield debut in this concert to play Elgar’s deeply emotional Cello Concerto\, a cornerstone of the instrument’s repertoire and\, famously\, the composer’s last completed work. Written in the aftermath of World War One\, it is a poignant work – never more so than in the heart-rending Adagio third movement – yet\, despite this\, there are still moments of that recognisable Elgarian nobility as well as hope. It remains amongst the composer’s most celebrated and well-loved works. \nIn striking contrast\, the concerto is framed by Shostakovich’s Festive Overture and Rachmaninov’s exuberant Symphony No.2. With its grandiose brass fanfare opening\, full of cymbal crashes\, the Festive Overture makes for a celebratory start to the Sheffield International Concert Season. \nKahchun Wong conductor\nRachel Helleur-Simcock cello \nSHOSTAKOVICH Festive Overture (7)\nELGAR Cello Concerto (30)\nInterval\nRACHMANINOV Symphony No.2 (60)

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL MASTERPIECES | Mendelssohn | Beethoven | Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating three giants of the Western art music canon\, and tomorrow’s generation of professional musicians\, the West Riding Ensemble assumes symphonic proportions for the first time and includes more aspiring young musicians than ever before. \nOne of the ensemble’s younger members\, Maria Nikolaeva\, performs Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto in E minor (1844) – a passionate and lyrical work that draws out the violin’s expressive power. \nComplementing the Mendelssohn in the first half of this concert is Beethoven’s fiery overture of 1807\, depicting the resolve and war-like nature of Coriolanus\, the central character of a play written by Heinrich Collin in 1804. \nMozart’s 40th is one of only two in a minor key of all his 42 symphonies. Completed in 1788\, it is a classic representation of the proto-Romantic German literary Sturm und Drang movement\, which brought intense emotional feeling and drama to the fore in a rejection of the reason\, order\, and universal truths of the 17th- and 18th-century Enlightenment. \nPROGRAMME\nBEETHOVEN: Coriolan Overture\, op. 62\nMENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto in E minor\, op. 64\nMOZART: Symphony 40 in G minor\, K550 \nMaria Nikolaeva | violin\nDavid Milsom | conductor
