SUMMARY:Echoes of the Isles: Hallam Sinfonia
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to do our first concert with guest conductor (and Yorkshire native) Ben Crick. This programme explores aspects of the British coast (Hebrides\, Tintagel)\, and also pieces connected with British landscapes but which have references to war: Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad is about a young man who goes off to war\, and Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony is often thought to relate to the landscapes of the Somme. \n

ORGANIZER;CN="Sheffield Symphony Orchestra":MAILTO:For Potential Players The SSO takes pride in the friendliness and supportive attitude between players. We believe this is why members have such long-standing loyalty and commitment to the orchestra. However, our membership does need to remain large enough to present the extensive repertoire we offer. In particular, we are looking to recruit more string players, especially violin and viola players of all ages. If you are interested, you can come along to a mutual trial period to see if it feels right. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from early September to late June, except during school holidays. To develop our orchestral sound, we plan to have day schools this season. This will be combined with social occasions to foster the orchestral camaraderie. We play to a high standard so players are expected to be a minimum level of grade 7 and usually around grade 8 or above. If the SSO’s description seems to match what you are looking for and you are curious, don’t hesitate to contact us via the website or Facebook, tweet us on Twitter, or call 07901 566960 to find out more.

SUMMARY:The Hallé & Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus (Sheffield International Concert Season 2024-25)
DESCRIPTION:The Sheffield International Concert Series season finale will leave you in awe of the wonders of creation. Under the baton of the Hallé’s charismatic Choral Director\, Matthew Hamilton\, the massed forces of the Hallé and the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus will be joined by a trio of exceptional soloists to breathe hope and joy into Haydn’s divine masterpiece\, The Creation. The composer dreamt of a big sound with this oratorio – around 180 musicians and singers took part in the Viennese premiere – and this life-affirming work takes you on a musical journey from chaos and darkness to the creation of a new world. The perfect antidote to a world of despair and tyranny\, this concert is a celebration of the beauty of life and the power of music.

SUMMARY:Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (Sheffield International Concert Season 2024-25)
DESCRIPTION:In their first visit to the UK and Sheffield\, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance will open with a short work by Filipino composer Jeffrey Ching\, the orchestra’s composer-in-residence\, who studied philosophy and music in Cambridge and London. Jeffrey Ching is writing a specially commissioned piece for the UK tour\, which he describes as ‘a dialogue across cultures which is also a playful commentary on the rituals of the concert hall’. Particularly well known for his interpretation of Tchaikovsky\, conductor Grzegorz Nowak leads the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra in this dramatic programme which includes suites from Bizet’s passionate opera Carmen and Tchaikovsky’s masterful ballet Swan Lake. \nAfter the interval\, Wen-Sinn Yang brings his expression\, mastery and technical skill to Tchaikovsky’s elegant Rococo Variations. Bringing the programme to a close is one of the most popular and frequently-sampled pieces of music\, Beethoven’s thundering Fifth Symphony.

SUMMARY:Accent on Youth
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Chamber Orchestra is delighted to welcome not one but four young soloists for tonight’s concert from the Sheffield Music Hub and the Sheffield Music Academy. \nEmma Rae Ward will be singing from the “Chants d’Auvergne” (“Songs from the Auvergne”)\, a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France arranged for soprano voice and orchestra by Joseph Canteloube between 1923-1930. The songs are in the local mediaeval language Auvergnat\, a dialect of Occitan. \nCellist Perris Heath is playing Fauré’s Élégie. Originally composed for Cello and Piano\, Fauré was asked for a version for cello and orchestra which was premiered in April 1901\, with none other than Pablo Casals as a soloist and the composer as conductor. \nMabel Bailey will delight on her flute with a Ballade by Carl Reinecke\, one of the most influential and versatile musicians of the second half of the 19th century. Ballade is charming and tuneful. Reinecke understood the instrument very well. \nDaniella Arnold joins us to share Massenet’s “Méditation”. The piece was originally composed as a symphonic intermezzo from the opera Thaïs and comes at the point when Athanaël\, a Cenobite monk\, has just confronted Thaïs\, a beautiful and hedonistic courtesan and a devotée of Venus\, and attempted to persuade her to leave her life of luxury and pleasure and find salvation through God. This piece is her meditating on this idea. Today it is considered to be one of the great encore pieces. \nIn addition to this feast\, the orchestra will be playing Bonis’s Bourrée and Mendelssohn’s first Symphony. \nThe full programme for the evening is:\nFauré: Élégie (Cello)\nBonis: Bourrée (Orchestra)\nMassenet: Méditation from Thaïs (Violin)\nReinecke: Ballade (Flute)\nCanteloube: Songs of the Auvergne (Soprano)\nMendelssohn: Symphony No. 1 (Orchestra)

SUMMARY:The Hallé (Sheffield International Concert Season 2024-25)
DESCRIPTION:Marta Gardolińska\, Music Director of the Opéra national de Lorraine\, conducts this programme of conflict and resolution. With its beautifully broad ranges of tonal colour\, tinged with the trials of the American Civil War\, it is easy to see why Copland’s score for Appalachian Spring earned him a Pulitzer Prize. Following this work\, Alena Baeva will step onto the platform to perform Barber’s Violin Concerto\, a piece which similarly vacillates between contentment and conflict. The “New World” Symphony was one of the triumphs of Dvořák’s musical career\, and it has been adored by audiences ever since. Aptly\, it accompanied Neil Armstrong on his first trip to the moon\, and in a rather more down-to-earth context\, the symphony’s second movement was used in the 1973 Ridley Scott-directed “Hovis” advert.

SUMMARY:Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra (Sheffield International Concert Season 2024 - 25)
DESCRIPTION:Since his first appearance with the brilliant Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra\, Carlo Tenan has become a frequent guest conductor of this distinctive ensemble. Now in post as its newly-appointed Artistic Director\, he brings Turkey’s leading orchestra to the Sheffield International Concert Series for the first time with two perennially popular symphonies\, Schubert’s tragic “Unfinished” and Beethoven’s idyllic “Pastoral”. The concert also includes the fiery creation by the great 20th century Turkish composer Ferit Tüzün. Composed when he was still studying in Germany in the 1950s\, Humoresque (Nasreddin Hoca) is considered to be among one of his most important works. “Pop-idol magnetism\, superb technique and exhilarating musicality reveal a sure star in the making” is how the Los Angeles Times described cellist Pablo Ferrández. He brings his glorious sound and effortless charisma to Saint-Saëns’ passionate First Cello Concerto.

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL WEEKEND 2025 – Carmen
DESCRIPTION:As part of Classical Sheffield’s ‘Classical Weekend’ Festival\, Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with the Opera on Location\, Hallam Choral Society\, and the Sheffield Music Education Hub. Together we present Bizet’s Carmen—a thrilling tale of passion\, jealousy\, and revenge\, reimagined with a new English libretto in a semi-staged production for today’s audience. \nWhen Micaela’s life is thrown into turmoil as her boyfriend abandons her for another woman\, the drama unfolds like an operatic Line of Duty\, with corruption\, betrayal\, and murder at its core. \nThis gripping performance combines powerful opera singing\, a full orchestra and dynamic chorus\, to deliver an unforgettable afternoon of high-stakes passion and the ultimate fight for freedom. From the seductive allure of Carmen’s iconic Habanera to the rousing defiance of Escamillo’s Toreador Song\, Bizet’s masterpiece brims with unforgettable melodies\, building to a breathtaking finale.\n\nUnder the bold direction of Rosie Kat and the masterful baton of George Morton\, this production lays bare the darker truths of human nature\, exploring the destructive forces of violence and obsession while keeping audiences captivated and entertained. Don’t miss this bold and exhilarating reimagining of one of opera’s greatest classics.

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL WEEKEND 2025 – The Hallé (Sheffield International Concert Season)
DESCRIPTION:The Hallé and its new Principal Conductor\, Kahchun Wong\, in his first season taking over the reins from Mark Elder\, are thrilled to be opening the Classical Sheffield Weekend festival with this programme of carefully considered firsts. Brahms\, a lifelong perfectionist\, seemed convinced that he would never write a symphony\, maintaining it would never measure up to the likes of Beethoven. It is therefore understandable that Brahms dragged his feet a little\, taking almost 15 years to finish his First Symphony. Following Ifukube’s Japanese Suite for Orchestra\, an imaginative arrangement of the prolific Japanese film and orchestral composer’s earliest work\, Piano Suite\, we welcome Mariam Batsashvili. Mariam first gained international recognition at the 2014 Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht and here she performs Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. Written over a staggering 26 years\, this masterwork remains an audience favourite today.

SUMMARY:Sheffield Chamber Orchestra Masterworks Concert
DESCRIPTION:Four masterpieces feature in tonight’s concert and we are delighted to welcome back Tim Horton as our fabulous soloist. This concert is not to be missed! \nWe begin with Mozart’s overture to his opera “Cosi fan tutte”. Full of Mozart’s usual brio\, brimming with energy as well as being fun\, fast\, lively\, and with plenty of gorgeous syncopated contrasts\, his tunes make full use of the treble end of our orchestra. Next we have Delius’ tone poem “On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring”  Sir Thomas Beecham said that this work “touched perfection.” \nTim Horton is our fabulous soloist tonight. Tim is one of the UK’s leading pianists https://timhortonpianist.co.uk/ We’re playing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto. This is a beautiful romantic piece that gives room to the orchestra\, without diminishing the role of the piano. \nFinally we are playing Beethoven’s Symphony No 2 in D. Beethoven finished composing his second symphony when he was starting to go beyond the established classical music conventions of his time and composing with a bolder more individual voice. From this point on his works increasingly grapple with human themes such as struggle\, assertion\, or celebration. Listen out for the rich melodic themes in the slow second movement and  the energetic dancing scherzo. \nThe full programme for the evening is: – \nMozart: Overture ‘Cosi fan tutte’\nDelius: On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring Schumann: Piano Concerto \nINTERVAL\nBeethoven: Symphony No. 2 in D\, Op. 36

Considered revolutionary in the years following its composition thanks to its rhythmic flow and musical imagery\, the solo violin acts as the songbird and the orchestra as the rolling landscape beneath it. Upon hearing the opening of Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony\, Andrew Manze was ‘instantly captivated by its magic’. (Presto Music)
