SUMMARY:Brigantes Variations with Tim Horton (Piano)
DESCRIPTION:HAYDN Symphony No. 94 in G\, Surprise\nLUTOSLAWSKI Paganini Variations\ninterval\nRACHMANINOV Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\nBRAHMS Haydn Variations \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. Why not guarantee your seat at every concert and save 20% on the whole lot by buying a season ticket! \nOur journey begins in 1792 with Haydn’s famous Surprise Symphony and a musical idea everyone can follow: take a tune and transform it! Four composers show how the same principal of variation can sound witty\, lyrical\, virtuosic or brilliantly modern. We’re thrilled to welcome back Tim Horton after his wonderful performance of Grieg last season!

SUMMARY:MENDELSSOHN Elijah
DESCRIPTION:Hallé Choral Director\, Matthew Hamilton\, takes the helm for this spectacular season finale. A true showstopper\, Mendelssohn’s Elijah captures the full spectrum of humanity’s struggles and triumphs\, bringing the powerful story of the prophet Elijah to life through music. For this masterpiece\, Sheffield’s resident orchestra and chorus will be joined by a star-studded cast of soloists who will weave this rich tapestry of sound\, blending rousing choruses\, lyrical arias\, complex choral fugues and vivid orchestrations\, ending with a triumphant “Amen”. \nCommissioned by the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival in 1846\, Mendelssohn returned to the city to conduct the premiere of Elijah to find crowds had flooded the streets and the large audience frequently interrupted the performance to applaud! “Never was there a more complete triumph” wrote a reviewer in The Times. \n\nThe Hallé\nSheffield Philharmonic Chorus\nMatthew Hamilton conductor\nCarolyn Sampson\, soprano\nAnna Stéphany\, mezzo-soprano\nJoshua Ellicott\, tenor\nJames Platt\, bass\n\nTickets from £22.95\, u-16s and students £9 – available online and in person from the City Hall box office.

ORGANIZER;CN="Sheffield Symphony Orchestra":MAILTO:For Potential Players The SSO takes pride in the friendliness and supportive attitude between players. We believe this is why members have such long-standing loyalty and commitment to the orchestra. However, our membership does need to remain large enough to present the extensive repertoire we offer. In particular, we are looking to recruit more string players, especially violin and viola players of all ages. If you are interested, you can come along to a mutual trial period to see if it feels right. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from early September to late June, except during school holidays. To develop our orchestral sound, we plan to have day schools this season. This will be combined with social occasions to foster the orchestral camaraderie. We play to a high standard so players are expected to be a minimum level of grade 7 and usually around grade 8 or above. If the SSO’s description seems to match what you are looking for and you are curious, don’t hesitate to contact us via the website or Facebook, tweet us on Twitter, or call 07901 566960 to find out more.

SUMMARY:CSYO Spring Concert: Music for A Great City
DESCRIPTION:Fanfare for the Common Man – Aaron Copland\nMusic for a Great City – Aaron Copland\nViolin Concerto in D – Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (soloist Martin Cropper) \nLink to tickets: https://www.trybooking.com/uk/GDLF \nJoin our city’s talented young musicians as they perform Copland’s celebratory music dedicated to the London Symphony Orchestra and the great city of London\, though almost certainly inspired by the great city of New York. This exciting piece will highlight our incredible wind\, brass and percussion sections in a sonic depiction of a bustling\, modern metropolis. Come on a journey with the orchestra through the sights and sounds of this moody city. \nOur brass and percussion will herald the start of the concert with Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man\, a piece that honours the ordinary citizen with its soaring melody and profound sense of dignity and strength. \nIn contrast\, the strings will be at centre stage for Tchaikosvky’s lyrical and passionate Violin Concerto in D. We are delighted that local musical celebrity and our very own\, inspirational violin tutor\, Martin Cropper\, will be bringing his own passion and virtuosity to this performance. No one can write a melody so well as Tchaikovsky\, and this favourite of the repertoire offers a real treat for the soloist\, orchestra and audience alike\, with its rich\, passionate soundscape\, bridging deep Slavic melancholy with vibrant Cossack-dance energy. \nThe City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra is one of the UK’s leading independent youth orchestras. CSYO provides valuable orchestral and musical training for young musicians of the region between 13 and 21. \nCSYO is a unique youth orchestra\, offering membership to students up to the age of 21. Many of our older students are at college or university\, training to be professional musicians. But we also have many students studying other subjects who want to keep performing at a high level. And we have plenty turning 22 who don’t want to leave!

SUMMARY:STRINGS AND ORGAN - West Riding Ensemble String Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Here WRE brings together professional players and students of artistic director David Milsom in a string orchestra tour de force\, featuring two concerti\, and one of the most celebrated British string orchestra compositions. \nVaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis stands as a pinnacle of a peculiarly British association with the string orchestra as an ensemble\, and is paired in this programme with the poignant Romance for string orchestra by Gerald Finzi. \nA total melodic and harmonic contrast is provided by Poulenc’s electrifying\, modernist Organ Concerto\, in spite of a gap in time of only 28 years after the Vaughan Williams Fantasia. This work (which also includes timpani) sees St Marie’s Cathedral’s Director of Music and organist Robert Webb as soloist on the fine\, restored but unmodernised three-manual Lewis organ\, which is in its 150th anniversary year. \nThe focal point for WRE founders David Milsom and Maria Nikolaeva is performing the world premiere of Vermeer Music\, a work written by Ian Crew for them as violin soloists with a string ensemble. The work uses Baroque forms\, including divisions (florid variations)\, and a fugato\, separating the players into ‘concertino’ (soloists) and ‘ripieno’ (ensemble) in the tradition of the Baroque concerto grosso. The work acts as a deep contemplation of the musical relationship of the two soloists\, initially as student and teacher\, but increasingly as colleagues and collaborators\, brought together with the inspiration of several paintings by the Dutch artist\, Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). This makes for a complex\, interwoven texture which links to perfection WRE’s union of scholarship\, performance passion\, and pedagogy. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, the string ensemble includes a number of students. WRE is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to give a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model\, and pays students a fair fee for their work. \nPROGRAMME\nCREW: Vermeer Music Concerto Grosso for two solo violins and string orchestra (2026)\nPOULENC: Organ Concerto (1938)\nVAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis (1910)\nFINZI: Romance (1928) \nPERFORMERS\nDavid Milsom & Maria Nikolaeva – solo violins\nRobert Webb – organ\nWRE String Orchestra\nConductors: Ian Crew\, John Lyon\, and Wilf Dingle

SUMMARY:JASAD: MUSIC FOR MIDDLE EASTERN FLUTE - Faris Ishaq
DESCRIPTION:Music in the Round presents Nay master\, percussionist and composer\, Faris Ishaq who charts unexplored territories with one of the oldest types of flute still in use today\, the Nay. Rooted in his Palestinian heritage\, Faris celebrates the instrument\, which has Middle Eastern roots dating back to around 5000 BCE\, and its cultural legacy\, in his own compositions. \nIn ‘Jasad’ – Arabic for ‘body’ – he draws on the essence of the Nay to create a distinctive solo setup\, playing the instrument alongside a leg-mounted frame drum and foot percussion\, and weaves these sounds together to produce a multi-layered acoustic solo performance. With exceptional dexterity and expressive nuance\, he blends intricate melodies with dynamic beats to evoke the feel of looped textures while being fully acoustic. \nSave 20% when you book for 10 or more Music in the Round Sheffield concerts in one transaction.\nSave 10% when you book for 5 or more Music in the Round Sheffield concerts in one transaction.
