SUMMARY:Hidden Track – Contemporary Classical Music Night
DESCRIPTION:We are a monthly series dedicated to promoting and showcasing contemporary classical music in the heart of Sheffield. \nWe’ll be hosting Hidden Track on the first Monday of every month at The Beaten Track. \nEntry is free. Open to performers\, composers\, and appreciators of all kinds. \nHow it works: \nEvery Hidden Track night will have two halves. The first half will be programmed performances. The second half will be experimental group improvisation. There will be a short break in between – do take advantage of the delicious drinks on offer from The Beaten Track! \nIf you would like to perform or have your piece performed during the first half\, please email us at hiddentracksheff@gmail.com. We are looking specifically for post-1960s compositions\, including your own works. This is a chance to try out new works in a relaxed and supportive environment. \nThe second half is a chance for musicians to experiment and create new sounds and timbres together. This jam session is for both experienced and new improvisers alike\, and your hosts will guide the session. Explorations of unconventional instrumentations and styles are welcome! \nIf you have no desire to perform or jam\, you are very welcome to come along and listen.

SUMMARY:Nights of Mystery and Magic
DESCRIPTION:Nights of Mystery & Magic takes audiences on an atmospheric musical journey through darkness\, dreams and extraordinary landscapes. From the haunting beauty of Ravel’s Pavane pour une Infante Defunte and the shimmering colours of de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain\, to the supernatural drama of Mussorgsky’s Night on the Bald Mountain and the striking contrasts of Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony\, this is an evening of music filled with mystery\, passion and vivid orchestral colour. The orchestra is joined by Ben Powell (piano) as the soloist for the de Falla. (Image generated by AI).

ORGANIZER;CN="Sheffield Symphony Orchestra":MAILTO:For Potential Players The SSO takes pride in the friendliness and supportive attitude between players. We believe this is why members have such long-standing loyalty and commitment to the orchestra. However, our membership does need to remain large enough to present the extensive repertoire we offer. In particular, we are looking to recruit more string players, especially violin and viola players of all ages. If you are interested, you can come along to a mutual trial period to see if it feels right. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from early September to late June, except during school holidays. To develop our orchestral sound, we plan to have day schools this season. This will be combined with social occasions to foster the orchestral camaraderie. We play to a high standard so players are expected to be a minimum level of grade 7 and usually around grade 8 or above. If the SSO’s description seems to match what you are looking for and you are curious, don’t hesitate to contact us via the website or Facebook, tweet us on Twitter, or call 07901 566960 to find out more.

SUMMARY:Brigantes Bach to Britten
DESCRIPTION:BRITTEN Sinfonietta Op. 1\nBACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D\nBACH Triple Concerto BWV1044\nSTRAVINSKY Dumbarton Oaks Concerto\nAlice Power (Piano)\, Laura Jellicoe (Flute)\, David Milsom (Violin) \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nImagine composers in the first decades of the 1900s revisiting the music of JS Bach\, what might they have written? Well\, Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks Concerto is\, in all but name\, another Brandenburg Concerto\, but with a distinctly modern voice. Each piece in this programme\, the Britten Sinfonietta\, the Stravinsky\, and two pieces by Bach\, exploit small forces and make soloists of the orchestral musicians.

SUMMARY:Brigantes War & Renewal
DESCRIPTION:PÄRT Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten\nBRITTEN Double Concerto for Violin and Viola\nVAUGHAN WILLIAMS Prelude to The 49th Parallel\nSHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 9 \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nArvo Pärt’s haunting tribute to Benjamin Britten takes us to 1977 and opens a programme shaped by reflection and remembrance. SUMMARY:Brigantes Missing Pieces
DESCRIPTION:SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8\nMOZART Requiem \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nOur journey ends with a year that stays in the memory of musicians as the year of Mozart’s death – 1791. His unfinished Requiem is played alongside another iconic\, unfinished work\, the 8th Symphony of Franz Schubert. Completed by later hands\, both pieces remain powerful\, moving and deeply human\, reminding us that great music can outlive its moment and continue speaking across generations. \nThe Brigantes Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Quentin Clare with Sarah Helsby Hughes (soprano)\, Nicola Wemyss (mezzo-soprano)\, David Watkin-Holmes (tenor) & Matthew Baker (baritone).
