SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky\, Howard and Howell
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra as it launches its 80th annual concert series with a vibrant and thrilling programme of music. \nThe concert will open with Dorothy Howell’s last large-scale orchestral work Three Divertissements. Originally written for the 1940 Proms but shelved due to wartime cancellations\, Three Divertissements has remained largely unheard until recent years. This lively and colourful suite is a brilliant rediscovery by a British composer whose music is finally being brought back to the spotlight. \nDani Howard’s Trombone Concerto is a powerful and uplifting response to the challenges of 2020\, written during lockdown as a celebration of human resilience and connection. Across three vivid movements – from quiet introspection to joyful\, high-energy celebration – the solo trombone takes on the role of an individual navigating a complex world\, ultimately emerging with hope and purpose. Expect dazzling virtuosity from soloist Blair Sinclair\, Principal Trombone of Opera North. \nFinally\, immerse yourself in the sweeping drama and rich romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor – a symphonic journey through fate\, passion\, and triumph. This is Tchaikovsky at his most emotionally compelling. \nCelebrate this milestone season with us and experience a night of powerful live music\, unforgettable melodies\, and virtuosic performance.

SUMMARY:SONGS OF LOVE
DESCRIPTION:Programme includes\nDVOŘÁK (arr. Matthews) Love Songs (18’)\nDEBUSSY Trois poèmes de Stéphane Malllarmé (13’)\nMUSSORGSKY The Nursery (selection) (10’)\nDEBUSSY String Quartet (25’) \nClaire Booth is a singer celebrated around the world for her distinctive and characterful voice and the relentless curiosity in the range of work she presents. In recent years she has become a frequent collaborator with Ensemble 360\, including a much-lauded CD release Pierrot Portraits. As they prepare for Music in the Round’s Sheffield Chamber Music Festival 2026\, of which Claire is Guest Curator\, they present a dazzling evening of French chamber music. \nIn 1913 Debussy and Ravel began a somewhat friendly rivalry to set three poems by Stéphane Mallarmé\, whose words\, like the music of these great French composers\, explored the same shimmering textures beloved of their contemporary impressionist painters. Ravel’s Chansons madécasses – one of the most popular works in SCMF 2024 – opens this sensuous celebration of light and love which concludes with Debussy’s glittering string quartet.

SUMMARY:BACH FOR SOLO VIOLIN
DESCRIPTION:BACH Sonata No.3 in C (25’)\nBACH Partita No.3 in E (20’) \nMarvels of violin writing\, Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas achieve the seemingly impossible: the solo violin is both melody and accompaniment\, conjuring two\, three or even four musical voices from a single instrument. Captivating to watch\, the sonatas and partitas are equal parts spellbindingly expressive and technically demanding. This is music that demands virtuosic skill from its player. For this\, the final in his series for Music in the Round\, Ensemble 360’s violinist Benjamin Nabarro will present Bach’s third Sonata and Partita. Inventive\, profoundly imaginative\, and demonstrating a mastery of the form unmatched in the 400 years since their composition\, these are pieces that continue to dazzle and amaze.

SUMMARY:SOUNDS OF NOW: ÉLIANE RADIGUE FOR ORGAN
DESCRIPTION:RADIGUE Occam XXV (45’) \nMusic in the Round presents Éliane Radigue’s ‘Occam XXV’ – written for\, and performed here by\, the French organist Frédéric Blondy – which envelops its listener in a rich and slowly evolving ocean of sound. Beginning with a low\, timbral rumble\, the music grows over its 45 minutes\, always imperceptibly changing\, to a richly layered\, shimmering and luxuriant texture which then\, as the piece draws to a close\, dissolves into air. This is music as sensation: sound to be immersed in – expansive and vibrational. As Radigue herself said\, “I imagine how we are all bathing in a galactic ocean of sound waves”. \nPart of: OCCAM OCEAN: THE MUSIC OF ÉLIANE RADIGUE \n“Radigue writes awesomely gradual music that is always on the move… It is music that flowers in some enchanted hinterland where sounds are sparse and mercurial\, spiritual and grounded\, narrative and abstract… she is always on the hunt for sound within sound – a realm of partials\, harmonics\, and subharmonics… the intangible cloud that makes up that note’s aura.”\nKate Molleson \nThe French composer Éliane Radigue\, now 93 years old\, has dedicated the last quarter of a century to crafting her extraordinary\, subtle and luminescent compositions for acoustic instruments. Each titled ‘Occam’ (after ‘Occam’s razor’\, the idea that the simplest solution is often the best)\, these warm and generous works explore the essence of an instrument’s sound in gradually unfolding\, richly present textures. \nFor ‘Occam Ocean’\, Music in the Round has curated a series of special events bringing together some of Radigue’s closest collaborators for two days of music and talks\, offering a rare\, immersive experience of this composer’s singular sound world. \nPresented in partnership with The University of Sheffield.

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL MASTERPIECES | Mendelssohn | Beethoven | Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating three giants of the Western art music canon\, and tomorrow’s generation of professional musicians\, the West Riding Ensemble assumes symphonic proportions for the first time and includes more aspiring young musicians than ever before. \nOne of the ensemble’s younger members\, Maria Nikolaeva\, performs Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto in E minor (1844) – a passionate and lyrical work that draws out the violin’s expressive power. \nComplementing the Mendelssohn in the first half of this concert is Beethoven’s fiery overture of 1807\, depicting the resolve and war-like nature of Coriolanus\, the central character of a play written by Heinrich Collin in 1804. \nMozart’s 40th is one of only two in a minor key of all his 42 symphonies. Completed in 1788\, it is a classic representation of the proto-Romantic German literary Sturm und Drang movement\, which brought intense emotional feeling and drama to the fore in a rejection of the reason\, order\, and universal truths of the 17th- and 18th-century Enlightenment. \nPROGRAMME\nBEETHOVEN: Coriolan Overture\, op. 62\nMENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto in E minor\, op. 64\nMOZART: Symphony 40 in G minor\, K550 \nMaria Nikolaeva | violin\nDavid Milsom | conductor
