SUMMARY:Hidden Track – Contemporary Classical Music Night
DESCRIPTION:We are a monthly series dedicated to promoting and showcasing contemporary classical music in the heart of Sheffield. \nWe’ll be hosting Hidden Track on the first Monday of every month at The Beaten Track. \nEntry is free. Open to performers\, composers\, and appreciators of all kinds. \nHow it works: \nEvery Hidden Track night will have two halves. The first half will be programmed performances. The second half will be experimental group improvisation. There will be a short break in between – do take advantage of the delicious drinks on offer from The Beaten Track! \nIf you would like to perform or have your piece performed during the first half\, please email us at hiddentracksheff@gmail.com. We are looking specifically for post-1960s compositions\, including your own works. This is a chance to try out new works in a relaxed and supportive environment. \nThe second half is a chance for musicians to experiment and create new sounds and timbres together. This jam session is for both experienced and new improvisers alike\, and your hosts will guide the session. Explorations of unconventional instrumentations and styles are welcome! \nIf you have no desire to perform or jam\, you are very welcome to come along and listen.

SUMMARY:STRINGS AND ORGAN - West Riding Ensemble String Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Here WRE brings together professional players and students of artistic director David Milsom in a string orchestra tour de force\, featuring two concerti\, and one of the most celebrated British string orchestra compositions. \nVaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis stands as a pinnacle of a peculiarly British association with the string orchestra as an ensemble\, and is paired in this programme with the poignant Romance for string orchestra by Gerald Finzi. \nA total melodic and harmonic contrast is provided by Poulenc’s electrifying\, modernist Organ Concerto\, in spite of a gap in time of only 28 years after the Vaughan Williams Fantasia. This work (which also includes timpani) sees St Marie’s Cathedral’s Director of Music and organist Robert Webb as soloist on the fine\, restored but unmodernised three-manual Lewis organ\, which is in its 150th anniversary year. \nThe focal point for WRE founders David Milsom and Maria Nikolaeva is performing the world premiere of Vermeer Music\, a work written by Ian Crew for them as violin soloists with a string ensemble. The work uses Baroque forms\, including divisions (florid variations)\, and a fugato\, separating the players into ‘concertino’ (soloists) and ‘ripieno’ (ensemble) in the tradition of the Baroque concerto grosso. The work acts as a deep contemplation of the musical relationship of the two soloists\, initially as student and teacher\, but increasingly as colleagues and collaborators\, brought together with the inspiration of several paintings by the Dutch artist\, Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). This makes for a complex\, interwoven texture which links to perfection WRE’s union of scholarship\, performance passion\, and pedagogy. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, the string ensemble includes a number of students. WRE is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to give a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model\, and pays students a fair fee for their work. \nPROGRAMME\nCREW: Vermeer Music Concerto Grosso for two solo violins and string orchestra (2026)\nPOULENC: Organ Concerto (1938)\nVAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis (1910)\nFINZI: Romance (1928) \nPERFORMERS\nDavid Milsom & Maria Nikolaeva – solo violins\nRobert Webb – organ\nWRE String Orchestra\nConductors: Ian Crew\, John Lyon\, and Wilf Dingle

SUMMARY:English Chamber Orchestra – Spotlight on Strings
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Gonley\, Leader of the English Chamber Orchestra since 1991\, brings her experience and dedication to this exquisite all-string programme. 50 years after his death\, Britten’s creativity is brilliantly captured in his vibrant Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge\, a vivid tribute to his revered teacher and mentor. The rest of the programme celebrates three timeless serenades\, opening with Elgar’s heartfelt work that radiates English pastoral charm. After the interval\, relish a sparkling gem from the Swedish composer\, Dag Wirén\, whose playful Serenade is full of light-hearted moments. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s sublime work\, an homage to Mozart that combines lyrical grace with sweeping emotional depth. This is a stunning celebration of masterful string writing. \nStephanie Gonley director \nELGAR Serenade for Strings (12)\nBRITTEN Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge (26)\nInterval\nWIRÉN Serenade for Strings (15)\nTCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings (28)
