DESCRIPTION:We are a monthly series dedicated to promoting and showcasing contemporary classical music in the heart of Sheffield. \nWe’ll be hosting Hidden Track on the first Monday of every month at The Beaten Track. \nEntry is free. Open to performers\, composers\, and appreciators of all kinds. \nHow it works: \nEvery Hidden Track night will have two halves. The first half will be programmed performances. The second half will be experimental group improvisation. There will be a short break in between – do take advantage of the delicious drinks on offer from The Beaten Track! \nIf you would like to perform or have your piece performed during the first half\, please email us at hiddentracksheff@gmail.com. We are looking specifically for post-1960s compositions\, including your own works. This is a chance to try out new works in a relaxed and supportive environment. \nThe second half is a chance for musicians to experiment and create new sounds and timbres together. This jam session is for both experienced and new improvisers alike\, and your hosts will guide the session. Explorations of unconventional instrumentations and styles are welcome! \nIf you have no desire to perform or jam\, you are very welcome to come along and listen.

Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nImagine composers in the first decades of the 1900s revisiting the music of JS Bach\, what might they have written? Well\, Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks Concerto is\, in all but name\, another Brandenburg Concerto\, but with a distinctly modern voice. Each piece in this programme\, the Britten Sinfonietta\, the Stravinsky\, and two pieces by Bach\, exploit small forces and make soloists of the orchestral musicians.

From there\, Spanish rhythms and colour inspire very different responses – from Prokofiev’s expressive violin writing to the vibrant storytelling of Falla’s Three-Cornered Hat. The journey continues with Vaughan Williams’ and Beethoven – each composer inspired by the countryside\, birdsong and open landscapes. All captured in their own distinctive way.
