SUMMARY:WRE SALON with Alice Power (2025 Prix Cortot winner)
DESCRIPTION:FRANCK: Violin Sonata (1886)\nCHOPIN: Piano Concerto no 2 (1829)\, original chamber version\nThis concert gains a special resonance from soloist\, Alice Power\, 2025 laureate of the Prix Cortot of the École Normale de Musique de Paris. Honouring Alfred Cortot—legendary pianist\, editor and teacher\, and co-founder of the École—the prize places Alice within a lineage in which Chopin and Franck are touchstones. Cortot himself studied piano in Paris with Chopin pupil Émile Decombes and is widely considered to be one of the composer’s finest interpreters\, whilst his performances of Franck with violinist Jacques Thibaud are legendary for their supple phrasing and helped cement the sonata’s place in the repertoire. This concert’s pairing mirrors Cortot’s own artistic world: the intimacy of Chopin heard at chamber scale\, and the poetic architecture of the Franco-Belgian tradition at its peak. \nChopin’s Piano Concerto no 2 in F minor appears here in the original scoring for string quintet\, a salon-scale medium Chopin himself favoured\, and one that Cortot prized for its clarity and conversational give-and-take (although he himself produced an orchestration and famously recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra and Barbirolli in 1935). In this chamber guise the concerto speaks with heightened intimacy: the strings are true partners in dialogue with the piano—exactly the sort of close-quarters eloquence that Cortot’s legacy celebrates. \nDavid Milsom—founder and artistic director of the West Riding Ensemble—is one of only a handful of global authorities on violin playing in the long 19th-century; his Romantic Violin Performing Practices: A Handbook (2020\, Boydell & Brewer) explores the topic in hands-on terms\, inviting fellow violinists to revisit practices that were trademarks of Franck’s world. \nDavid and Alice first performed together at the official launch of WRE in September 2024\, when the ensemble revelled in a shared passion for Shostakovich’s chamber music. Now they come together again to delve into another common interest with Franck’s violin sonata. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, the quintet line-up for this concert sees talented young students\, Maria Nikolaeva\, Perris Heath\, and Lucas Jordan\, working with seasoned musicians in a professional recital. WRE is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to give a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model\, and pays students a fair fee for their work. \nAlice Power | piano\nDavid Milsom | violin\nWRE Quintet | David Milsom & Maria Nikolaeva\, violin; Charlotte Kenyon\, viola; Perris Heath\, cello; Lucas Jordan\, double bass

SUMMARY:THE GENIUS OF BEETHOVEN
DESCRIPTION:Sonata for Cello and Piano No.3 Op.69 (26’)\n Trio for Piano\, Clarinet and Cello Op.11 (20’)\n String Quartet in A minor Op.132 (45’) \nLudwig van Beethoven – a true genius\, and one of the greatest composers to have ever lived – is celebrated in this Music in the Round concert showcasing the ingenuity and inventiveness of his chamber works. The Cello Sonata was written when Beethoven was at the height of his musical powers\, beloved by performers and audiences alike. Known as the ‘Gassenhauer Trio’\, the unusual combination of cello\, clarinet and piano shows brilliant writing for all the instruments and has always been well-received for its use of a popular operatic tune in the final movement. His late String Quartet – with its spellbinding\, elegiac third movement\, subtitled the ‘Holy Song of Thanksgiving’ – concludes an evening that will captivate\, astonish and amaze.

SUMMARY:QUARTET FOR THE END OF TIME
DESCRIPTION:KLEIN String Trio (12’)\nSMIT Trio for Clarinet\, Viola and Piano (12’)\nMESSIAEN Quartet for the End of Time (50’) \nOlivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is the centrepiece of this Music in the Round concert showcasing music to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the internment\, concentration and death camps of Europe. Considered one of the 20th century’s greatest works\, Messiaen composed the Quartet while a prisoner of war in the Stalag VIII-A camp. As Steven Osborne writes\, “the music seems to touch the far edges of human experience”. Also featured in the programme is Gideon Klien’s folk-infused String Trio\, composed just ten days before Klien was transported from Terezín to Auschwitz\, and Leo Smit’s lyrical and profoundly expressive Trio for Clarinet\, Viola and Piano.

SUMMARY:BACH FOR SOLO VIOLIN
DESCRIPTION:BACH Sonata No.3 in C (25’)\nBACH Partita No.3 in E (20’) \nMarvels of violin writing\, Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas achieve the seemingly impossible: the solo violin is both melody and accompaniment\, conjuring two\, three or even four musical voices from a single instrument. Captivating to watch\, the sonatas and partitas are equal parts spellbindingly expressive and technically demanding. This is music that demands virtuosic skill from its player. For this\, the final in his series for Music in the Round\, Ensemble 360’s violinist Benjamin Nabarro will present Bach’s third Sonata and Partita. Inventive\, profoundly imaginative\, and demonstrating a mastery of the form unmatched in the 400 years since their composition\, these are pieces that continue to dazzle and amaze.

SUMMARY:SOUNDS OF NOW: ÉLIANE RADIGUE FOR HARP\, VIOLIN & DOUBLE BASS
DESCRIPTION:RADIGUE\nOccam XXI (16’)\nOccam River XVIII (15’)\nOccam XVII (13’)\nOccam River XVII (16’)\nOccam (28’)\nOccam River XV (15’)\nOccam Delta XIV (17’) \nIn this special Music in the Round concert\, Welsh harpist and improvisor Rhodri Davies\, together with Angharad Davies (violin) and Dominic Lash (double bass)\, present a selection of works composed for them by Radigue. Ranging from solos to ensemble pieces\, this is a rare opportunity to explore the singular aesthetic of one of the 21st century’s most important composers\, performed by some of the musicians with whom she has most closely collaborated. Through extended instrumental techniques (the harp is played using two violin bows) and a close attention to timbre\, Radigue conjures luminescent\, intricately layered and richly textural soundscapes that slowly evolve. \nPart of: OCCAM OCEAN: THE MUSIC OF ÉLIANE RADIGUE \n“Radigue writes awesomely gradual music that is always on the move… It is music that flowers in some enchanted hinterland where sounds are sparse and mercurial\, spiritual and grounded\, narrative and abstract… she is always on the hunt for sound within sound – a realm of partials\, harmonics\, and subharmonics… the intangible cloud that makes up that note’s aura.”\nKate Molleson \nThe French composer Éliane Radigue\, now 93 years old\, has dedicated the last quarter of a century to crafting her extraordinary\, subtle and luminescent compositions for acoustic instruments. Each titled ‘Occam’ (after ‘Occam’s razor’\, the idea that the simplest solution is often the best)\, these warm and generous works explore the essence of an instrument’s sound in gradually unfolding\, richly present textures. \nFor ‘Occam Ocean’\, Music in the Round has curated a series of special events bringing together some of Radigue’s closest collaborators for two days of music and talks\, offering a rare\, immersive experience of this composer’s singular sound world. \nPresented in partnership with The University of Sheffield.

SUMMARY:CHRIS ADDISON’S INCOMPLETE GUIDE TO CHAMBER MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:Chris Addison (The Thick of It\, Mock the Week) joins Music in the Round and Ensemble 360 to bring his infectious enthusiasm for classical music to the Crucible. \nTelling the story of Europe from the courts of 17th century Italy\, through the political and social revolutions of 18th and 19th century Europe\, to the weird and wonderful sounds conjured by today’s contemporary composers\, Chris takes us on a journey through the rich\, vibrant – and sometimes bizarre – history of classical chamber music. \nDiscover how a bassoonist beat up Bach\, Mozart’s passion for the newly-invented clarinet (and for crude poetry)\, Beethoven’s embattled relationship with his failing hearing and the Emperor of France\, and how Schoenberg tore up the musical rule book in a continent ravaged by war. DESCRIPTION:Johannes Marmen – violin\, Laia Valentin Braun – violin\, Bryony Gibson-Cornish – viola\, Sinead O’Halloran – cello \n‘Music communicated with vitality\, intensity and courage’ \nEarly in their formation\, the Marmen worked with the late Peter Cropper of Sheffield’s Lindsay String Quartet\, who said\, “Performing is all about communication. It’s telling a story and I feel the Marmen are dedicated to this ideal.” Performing together since 2013\, the Marmen Quartet have a reputation for the courage\, vitality and intensity of its performances. The quartet have performed extensively in Europe and in the USA\, winning performance prizes and critical plaudits that prove that this early impression has only grown to characterise their performances throughout. DESCRIPTION:Prach Boondiskulchok – piano\, Konrad Elias-Trostmann – violin\, Vladimir Waltham – cello \n‘Lyrical\, distinctive and engaging’ \nLinos Piano Trio gave a captivating and rapturously received performance in Bradfield two years ago and we are delighted they are back. The three players share a vision for the piano trio repertoire to be experienced in a fresh\, personal and visceral way and in so doing\, create gripping concert experiences. This was so true of their last appearance in Bradfield\, and we can’t wait for a second listen to traditional and less familiar works\, reinvented to appear as if newly written. The multiple award winning trio have performed at international concert venues in the UK\, Europe and beyond and have achieved high critical acclaim for their recordings of piano trios by Beethoven\, CPE Bach and works by Ravel.
