SUMMARY:Sheffield International Concert Season 26/27 - Royal Northern Sinfonia
DESCRIPTION:Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen\, who exhibits a natural authority and charismatic flair on the podium\, opens the Royal Northern Sinfonia’s concert with Stravinsky’s whitty Danses concertantes\, one of the composer’s most vibrant neoclassical creations. Next up is Hummel’s agile and lyrical Trumpet Concerto\, a real showcase for “trumpeter extraordinaire” (BBC Music Magazine) Matilda Lloyd. After the interval\, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony brings the evening to a thrilling close. Performed to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death\, this joyful symphony reminds us why his music continues to inspire and unite audiences today.

SUMMARY:Brigantes Spanish Flair
DESCRIPTION:RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Capriccio Espagnol\nPROKOFIEV Violin Concerto No. 2\ninterval\nDE FALLA The Three-Cornered Hat (complete) \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nOur next stop is 1887\, where Rimsky-Korsakov paints a dazzling musical picture of Spain. From there\, Spanish rhythms and colour inspire very different responses – from Prokofiev’s expressive violin writing to the vibrant storytelling of Falla’s Three-Cornered Hat. It’s a programme full of energy\, atmosphere\, (castanets)\, and unmistakable character! \nSarah Helsby Hughes (soprano) and Charlie Lovell-Jones (violin)

SUMMARY:Hallé Orchestra - Sheffield International Concert Season 2026/27 –
DESCRIPTION:The Hallé Orchestra returns with Mahler’s heady Fifth Symphony and Rachmaninov’s wicked Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The story goes that the 19th century violin virtuoso\, Niccolo Paganini\, sold his soul to Satan in exchange for his extraordinary talent. Rachmaninov’s theme and variations on one off Paganini’s compositions goes to prove that the devil really does have the best tunes. Russian pianist Alexi Volodin brings a galvanising vitality to this richly imaginative piece. After the interval\, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony takes centre stage. Beginning with a funeral march\, this monumental work travels from a mood of hopelessness\, through one of the composer’s most beloved slow movements\, to its unforgettably jubilant conlusion. Mahler specialist Kahchun Wong will bring his signature energy to this performance.

SUMMARY:Brigantes Pastoral Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:DEBUSSY Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un faune\nVAUGHAN WILLIAMS The Lark Ascending\nBEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6 in F\, Pastoral \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nArriving in 1894\, we step into Debussy’s shimmering world of sound and atmosphere. The journey continues with Vaughan Williams’ and Beethoven – each composer inspired by the countryside\, birdsong and open landscapes. All captured in their own distinctive way. This concert is part of the Classical Sheffield Festival 2027. \nJonathan Martindale (violin)

SUMMARY:Beethoven\, Fauré\, Mayer and Rutter
DESCRIPTION:Our second concert of the season pairs stirring drama with radiant lyricism. Emilie Mayer’s Overture No 2 in D opens with bold symphonic sweep\, while Fauré’s serene Cantique de Jean Racine and works by Rutter offer moments of luminous calm. The evening culminates in Beethoven’s groundbreaking Eroica symphony – a work of heroic scale and emotional depth that redefined the possibilities of the symphony. A powerful programme charting music’s journey from elegance to revolution. We welcome again Hohn Lyon as our conductor.

SUMMARY:Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus: Young Composer Competition concert
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 24 April 2027\, 19.30\, St Marie’s cathedral\, \nYoung Composer Competition concert\n  \nA special concert to present the world premiere of the winning composition in the third Stella Jockel Young Composer Competition organised by the Chorus. The concert will include other wonderful choral works in the superb acoustic of St Marie’s cathedral. \nComments from the previous concert in St Marie’s: \n\n“I enjoyed all the pieces (and all were new to me)… It wasn’t really the individual pieces\, for me\, though. It was the all-encompassing sounds of dozens of voices in rhythm and harmony\, plus that magnificent organ\, filling such an acoustic space.” audience member\n“The choir was on top form.” audience member\n“I loved the unusual sounds [the] voices made in the Seven Stars piece – really compelling.” audience member\n“My highlight was the superbly dramatic Hymne au Soleil. Brilliantly varied programming.” audience member\n“I’m not sure I’d have listened properly to that extraordinary Langlais mass if it’d come on the radio\, but hearing it live\, sung with such commitment and energy\, made for a great all-encompassing encounter which reminds you why the live experience is so essential.” audience member\n“Really interesting choice of repertoire\, done well.” James Mitchell\, organist\n“You made a fantastic sound. All credit to Darius for choosing such fantastic rarely-performed repertoire\, perfect for the space and to show off our Lewis organ. You made the most of the opportunity to sing in the best acoustic in Sheffield.” Robert Webb\, Music Director of St Marie’s Cathedral
