SUMMARY:'Brassed Off' with Loxley Silver Band
DESCRIPTION:Grenoside and Birley Carr Players present\n‘Brassed Off’\nwith special guests Loxley Silver Band\n  \nA play by Paul Allen\, adapted from the 1996 screenplay by Mark Herman. \nThe national Miners’ Strike has been over for ten years but in the coal communities of South Yorkshire tensions still simmer and old wounds are slow to heal. \nThe miners of Grimley now face the challenge of pit closures and redundancies – but if the pit goes\, it looks as though their beloved brass band will go too. \nDetermined to play through adversity\, band master Danny is sure that his mining musicians can get all the way through to the British Championships at the Royal Albert Hall. \nAnd with new flugelhorn player\, Gloria\, joining the seasoned veterans\, it’s a dream that might just come true… \n  \nThe film was adapted for the stage in 1998 by the Sheffield writer and broadcaster Paul Allen. The critically-acclaimed production premiered at the Crucible and also ran at the National Theatre. This year it was revived at the Leeds Playhouse and we’re delighted to bring it to South Yorkshire with our community production\, which marks 30 years since the release of the film. The band’s music is an integral part of the story and this will be performed live by our special guests Loxley Silver Band. \nIf you’re interested in this production then look out for our production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Ruddigore‘\, running from 16th–20th March 2027. \n  \nAbout Loxley Silver Band \nLoxley Silver Band were established in 1889 and are now based in Stannington. SUMMARY:Sheffield Chamber Orchestra Masterworks Concert
DESCRIPTION:Four masterpieces feature in tonight’s concert and we are delighted to welcome back Tim Horton as our fabulous soloist. This concert is not to be missed! \nWe begin with Mozart’s overture to his opera “Cosi fan tutte”. Full of Mozart’s usual brio\, brimming with energy as well as being fun\, fast\, lively\, and with plenty of gorgeous syncopated contrasts\, his tunes make full use of the treble end of our orchestra. Next we have Delius’ tone poem “On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring”  Sir Thomas Beecham said that this work “touched perfection.” \nTim Horton is our fabulous soloist tonight. Tim is one of the UK’s leading pianists https://timhortonpianist.co.uk/ We’re playing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto. This is a beautiful romantic piece that gives room to the orchestra\, without diminishing the role of the piano. \nFinally we are playing Beethoven’s Symphony No 2 in D. Beethoven finished composing his second symphony when he was starting to go beyond the established classical music conventions of his time and composing with a bolder more individual voice. From this point on his works increasingly grapple with human themes such as struggle\, assertion\, or celebration. Listen out for the rich melodic themes in the slow second movement and  the energetic dancing scherzo. \nThe full programme for the evening is: – \nMozart: Overture ‘Cosi fan tutte’\nDelius: On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring Schumann: Piano Concerto \nINTERVAL\nBeethoven: Symphony No. 2 in D\, Op. 36

SUMMARY:CONTRASTS performed by Claire Booth & Ensemble 360
DESCRIPTION:Separated by a few short years and the turn of a century\, this concert features two utterly different string quartets from two modernist giants who typify the staggering range of fin de siècle classical music. \nSchoenberg’s visionary second quartet sees Ensemble 360 joined by superstar soprano Claire Booth for a surprisingly accessible and personal work that stretches from the intimate to the interstellar. Debussy’s sensual and impressionistic quartet shimmers with life and light between opening storms and a grand conclusion. \nClaire Booth \nBritish soprano Claire Booth has become internationally renowned both for her commitment to an extraordinary breadth of repertoire\, and for the vitality and musicianship that she brings to the operatic stage and concert platform. In the 2019-20 season alone her diverse schedule included Benjamin’s A Mind of Winter with The Hong Kong Philharmonic\, a streamed 5 star performance of Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine for Grange Park Opera\, The title role in Handel’s Berenice for ROH\, the critically acclaimed recording of Grieg songs\, performances of Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tippett’s Child of Our Time with the CBSO. \nEnsemble 360\nEnsemble 360 has gained an enviable reputation across the UK for the quality and integrity of their performances. Formed in 2005\, eleven musicians of international standing came together to take up residency in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round\, establishing a versatile group comprising five string players\, five wind players and a pianist.
