SUMMARY:Lunchtime Concerts: Heidi Rolfe & Benjamin Frith
DESCRIPTION:The Planets Suite by Holst arr. Nora Day and Vally Lasker. A special edition of our free concerts series. \nWomen in Focus \nThe Planets Suite forms the bedrock of the Orchestral and Two piano repertoire. As such a famous work we don’t look through to the two women who made it all possible. \nNora Day and Vally Lasker were invaluable to Holst\, playing through his work for two pianos as part of the compositional process\, his trust in Day and Lasker was unfailing. Their arrangement of this work for four hands on one piano is a remarkable achievement and an incredible feat of musicianship\, endorsed by Holst himself. \nThe work of these two remarkable women has largely gone unnoticed and unrecognised. We hope to shine a light on their talent and musicianship in the incredible arrangement of this iconic work.

SUMMARY:Hallé Orchestra - Sheffield International Concert Season 2026/27
DESCRIPTION:Known for his desire to connect people through the power of orchestral theatre\, conductor Nicholas Collon join the Hallé Orchestra and guides us through a programme that dreams of far-off lands. Szymanowski’s rhapsodic and ecstatic Second Violin Concerto pays homage to the folk music of the Tatra mountains in the composer’s native Poland\, brought to life with breathtaking virtuosity by one of the Hallé Orchestra’s Leaders\, Emily Davis. Rachmaninov’s brooding Third Symphony\, written whilst in exile in Switzerland\, yearns for the Russian’s composer’s lost homeland. Fleeting and fantastical\, Colin Matthews’ luminous orchestrations bring Ravel’s enchanting miniature worlds to life; glimpse of wintry city ravaged by the winds of change\, a shimmering dreamscape and a merry Christmas scene.

SUMMARY:David Greilsammer – Dance or Die
DESCRIPTION:One of today’s most audacious conductors and pianists\, live at Firth Hall \nThe Journey\nIt was a few years ago\, during a trip to the Amazon Jungle. While watching an ancestral ceremony\, I was struck by an extreme need to change the way I was approaching my instrument. Naturally\, I didn’t have any piano around me at that moment\, but I knew that from now on\, I would have to embrace it with a more corporal\, immediate\, and choreographic attitude\, one that can express our human wish to be free\, in a world that seems increasingly insane and cruel. Strangely\, it is in that precise instant\, in the middle of the Colombian Rainforest that came to my mind the piece that would become the cornerstone of this album\, Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze. \nThroughout its eighteen short dances\, symbolizing the battle for the arts\, also hides\, behind the notes\, a passionate secret letter from the composer to his loved one. The two Baroque dances by Purcell\, expressing stunning rhythmic innovations\, as well as the two preludes by Debussy\, revealing surreal creatures and their fantastical choreographies – all seemed to be essential to this journey. But along with these three men of the past\, I felt the necessity to explore dance through the eyes of three women of our time\, each one a composer from a different background and tradition. This dialogue between sounds of today and those of a far\, distant time\, was vital. Carolina Noguera’s work La Noche de los Cuerpos – bringing together rituals from her native Colombia and a contemporary language – was meant to find itself in the centre of this voyage. \nConnecting the various universes in which she evolves – classical pianist by day\, DJ by night\, as well as a collaborator of various pop icons\, British composer Georgie Ward has given life to a piece intertwining the worlds of techno and body-percussion\, propelling us to an imaginary night club. Calling on her Nigerian roots and paying tribute to the rhythmic power of African percussion\, Nkeiru Okoye has created music full of explosive\, mystic\, and blazing colours. As Nietzsche wrote in his marvellous book Thus Spoke Zarathustra\, “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star”. \nProgramme\nRobert Schumann (1810-1856): Davidsbündlertänze\, Book I (16’)\nNkeiru Okoye (born 1974) Dance Til’ you Drop (new piece\, world premiere) (2’)\nHenry Purcell (1659-1695): Corant\, from Suite in D Minor (2’)\nGeorgie Ward (born 1990): Techno Confessional\, chapter I (new piece\, world premiere) (‘3)\nClaude Debussy (1862-1918): Les fées sont d’exquises danseuses\, from Préludes (‘4)\nCarolina Noguera (born 1978): La Noche de los Cuerpos (new piece\, world premiere) (7’)\nClaude Debussy (1862-1918): Danseuses de Delphes\, from Préludes (3’)\nGeorgie Ward (born 1990): Techno Confessional\, chapter II (new piece\, world premiere) (‘3)\nHenry Purcell (1659-1695): Hornpipe\, from Suite in D Minor (2’)\nNkeiru Okoye (born 1974) Drums Calling (3’)\nRobert Schumann (1810-1856): Davidsbündlertänze\, Book II (17’) \n65 minutes with no intermission.

SUMMARY:Sheffield International Concert Season 26/27 - Stuttgart Philharmonic
DESCRIPTION:The Stuttgart Philharmonic\, here making its debut\, is joined by Mariano Chiacchiarini\, one of the most compelling conductors of his generation. Come and discover\, or simply immerse yourself in\, some familiar classics in this hugely evocative concert\, starting with Mendelsson’s striking overture. The composer sketched its opening theme on a postcard whilst visiting the echoing sea cave on Staffa and the final work perfectly captures the moody atmosphere of the Scottish seascape. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony is a musical depiction of an unfolding landscape; from the swooping horn calls of its opening\, conjuring a slow sunrise over the vast Nordic horizon\, to its theatrical ending with six massive chords\, separated by silence. Performing one of Mozart’s most celebrated piano concertos is Jeneba Kanneh-Mason\, who makes a welcome return to Sheffield.

This event is always popular so it is recommended to buy tickets in advance. (Discounted early-bird tickets are available until the end of October).

SUMMARY:Sheffield International Concert Season 26/27 - Royal Northern Sinfonia
DESCRIPTION:Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen\, who exhibits a natural authority and charismatic flair on the podium\, opens the Royal Northern Sinfonia’s concert with Stravinsky’s whitty Danses concertantes\, one of the composer’s most vibrant neoclassical creations. Next up is Hummel’s agile and lyrical Trumpet Concerto\, a real showcase for “trumpeter extraordinaire” (BBC Music Magazine) Matilda Lloyd. After the interval\, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony brings the evening to a thrilling close. Performed to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death\, this joyful symphony reminds us why his music continues to inspire and unite audiences today.

SUMMARY:Hallé Orchestra - Sheffield International Concert Season 2026/27 –
DESCRIPTION:The Hallé Orchestra returns with Mahler’s heady Fifth Symphony and Rachmaninov’s wicked Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The story goes that the 19th century violin virtuoso\, Niccolo Paganini\, sold his soul to Satan in exchange for his extraordinary talent. Rachmaninov’s theme and variations on one off Paganini’s compositions goes to prove that the devil really does have the best tunes. Russian pianist Alexi Volodin brings a galvanising vitality to this richly imaginative piece. After the interval\, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony takes centre stage. Beginning with a funeral march\, this monumental work travels from a mood of hopelessness\, through one of the composer’s most beloved slow movements\, to its unforgettably jubilant conlusion. Mahler specialist Kahchun Wong will bring his signature energy to this performance.

SUMMARY:Sheffield International Concert Season 2026/27 - Taiwan Philharmonic
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to blast off into space with the Taiwan Philharmonic\, under the direction of experienced Mission Control Commander\, Jun Markl! Colliding with NASA’s planned launch of the Artemis 3 and the 50th anniversary of the release of George Lucas’ iconic film\, Star Wars\, the voyage begins with the irresistibly energetic Short Ride in a Fast Machine by American Composer John Adams. Richard Strauss’ dramatic tone poem\, Also sprach Zarathustra\, became famous after Stanley Kubrick chose to use his opening to represent the sunrise from space in his classic film\, 2001:A Space Odyssey. Holst characteristic portraits of two planets\, Mars and Jupiter\, lead seamlessly into music from Star Wars\, written by the legendary film composer\, John Williams. Perfect for classical music fans and first-time concertgoers alike\, this accessible programme celebrates the orchestra at its most cinematic and spine-tingling.

SUMMARY:Hallé Orchestra - Sheffield International Concert Season 2026/27 –
DESCRIPTION:For this concert\, the Hallé Orchestra is joined by Lidiya Yankoskaya\, a conductor with an unshakeable sense that classical music is a living\, responsive art form. She opens the concert with Missy Mazzoli’s looping\, twisting Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres). It is music that churns and rolls\, inches closer to the listener then leaps away at breakneck speed\, flinging itself recklessly into space. Henning Kraggerud\, the outstanding Norwegian violinist\, showcases his skills in Bruch’s ever-popular Violin Concerto\, with its romantic second movement and glorious finale. Born out of crisis\, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony was written during one of the darkest periods of his life – a disastrous marriage\, a nervous breakdown and near-suicidal despair. Reflecting the composer’s inner turmoil\, the music delivers drama and drive as it journeys from emotional struggle to blazing affirmation.

SUMMARY:Czech National Symphony Orchestra - Sheffield International Concert Season 2026/27
DESCRIPTION:The Czech National Symphony Orchestra returns with its Music Director\, the internationally acclaimed conductor Steven Mercurio\, bringing a programme that celebrates the spirit of Bohemia. Smetana opens each half of the concert: first\, the sparkling overture to his opera The Bartered Bride and then his vivid musical picture immortalizing the Vltava river that flows through Prague. Symphony evokes birdsong\, rustic folk dances and the open landscapes and natural surroundings of Vysoka\, a village in central Bohemia where the composer wrote the work. To complete the programme is Rachmaninov’s mighty Second Piano Concerto\, treasured for its sweeping lyricism\, rich harmonies\, and heartfelt emotion. To take the solo role is Mark Bebbington\, fast emerging as one of Britain’s most distinctive and innovative pianists.
