SUMMARY:Mahler\, Farrenc\, and Bottesini
DESCRIPTION:From the first dramatic notes of Louise Farrenc’s sparkling Overture No. 2\, this concert celebrates orchestral colour\, virtuosity and emotional power on a grand scale. \nOne of the most significant French women composers of the 19th century\, Farrenc combines classical elegance with the energy and drama of early Romanticism in an overture that deserves to be heard far more often. Then comes a concert rarity; while violin and piano concertos are familiar favourites\, opportunities to hear a double bass concerto live are few and far between. Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to welcome rising star\, Nathan Knight as soloist in Giovanni Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2 – a dazzling showpiece by the legendary “Paganini of the Double Bass” – the concerto combines technical brilliance with lyrical\, operatic beauty. \nThe second half is devoted to Mahler’s monumental Fifth Symphony. From its famous opening trumpet fanfare and funeral march to the radiant final pages\, the work charts an extraordinary emotional journey. At its heart lies the much-loved Adagietto\, one of the most beautiful movements in the orchestral repertoire\, before the symphony concludes in a blaze of energy and triumph. More than a century after its premiere\, Mahler’s Fifth remains one of the most exhilarating and rewarding achievements in symphonic music.

SUMMARY:Brigantes War & Renewal
DESCRIPTION:PÄRT Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten\nBRITTEN Double Concerto for Violin and Viola\nVAUGHAN WILLIAMS Prelude to The 49th Parallel\nSHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 9 \nStep into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year\, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies\, vivid storytelling\, nature\, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again. \nArvo Pärt’s haunting tribute to Benjamin Britten takes us to 1977 and opens a programme shaped by reflection and remembrance. Britten\, Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams offer very different responses to conflict – sometimes questioning\, sometimes hopeful – showing how composers use music to process the world around them. \nAgata Daraškaitė (violin) and Elitsa Bogdanova (viola)

SUMMARY:Northern Lights
DESCRIPTION:Journey north with a programme inspired by the landscapes\, folklore and elemental power of Scandinavia. \nEdvard Grieg’s much-loved music from Peer Gynt opens the concert\, transporting audiences from the serenity of Morning Mood to the thrilling drama of In the Hall of the Mountain King. These enduring favourites capture the imagination and atmosphere of Norway’s mountains\, forests and legends. \nThe voyage continues with Bränningar (“Breaking Waves”) by the Swedish composer Helena Munktell. A vivid and evocative orchestral work\, it paints a striking picture of the sea in motion\, showcasing a composer whose music is only now beginning to receive the wider recognition it deserves. \nThe concert culminates in Sibelius’s majestic Fifth Symphony\, one of the crowning achievements of the symphonic repertoire. Inspired by the Finnish landscape and the sight of sixteen swans in flight\, the symphony unfolds from mysterious beginnings to one of the most uplifting and unforgettable finales ever written.
