Singers' Society (University of Sheffield)

Three Choirs, No Auditions, One Award-Winning Society!
The Singers’ Society is one of the biggest societies at the University of Sheffield and is open to all - undergraduates, postgraduates, staff, and international/Erasmus/ semester abroad students, as well as local Sheffield residents.
SingSoc exists to give students and local professionals the chance to sing with a large group of like-minded individuals in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We perform a wide variety of choral music to a high standard and enjoy doing so! We put on three concerts of our own a year, as well as taking part in many smaller Union, University and community events.
The society runs a large Main Chorus, with over 100 members this year, which is open to all whatever their experience. We also run two smaller choirs; our chamber choir Socii Cantorum and our Ladies' Choir. These choirs give more experienced singers with good sight-reading skills the opportunity to sing in a more intimate group atmosphere.
SingSoc is proud to have a non-auditioning policy, and so all of our choirs are open to anyone who wishes to join! (To read more about this policy and our reasoning behind it, please see our Society Policy page:
Our repertoire for the 2014/15 is as ever hugely varied and is going to be a lot of fun. In November all three choirs will be putting on a concert with a "Pop Tarts" Theme, based around songs from the 70's up to the year 2000, and featuring songs such as "Build me up Buttercup", "I will survive", "Eye of the Tiger" and "Mr Blue Sky". In December all three choirs will be involved in our traditional Christmas concert, “Carols at Firth Hall”, featuring all the classic carols. In May we will be performing songs based on a Shakespeare theme.
In addition to all this, we will also be singing at various community events throughout the year, including lots of carolling around Christmastime. Last year we were involved in events fundraising for our two adopted charities, the Lary Project and In Place of War. We also have lots of volunteering opportunities for our members, from getting involved in a singing club at Sheffield Children's Hospital, to hosting various workshops including a 'Sing and Sign' day for local primary school children, to performing at a local residential home.
We also have a very active social life. In addition to our trips to the pub after every rehearsal we also have a varied programme of social events planned for the coming year. This includes our traditional pub carolling trips in December and the end of year formal; as well as meals out, nights out and trips to see local theatre and cinema performances.
We rehearse every week of university term time in the Richard Roberts Auditorium (located on the University roundabout, just across the Western Bank road from the Information Commons), feel free to come along to any of our rehearsals:
