Sheffield Strings
The aim of Sheffield Strings is to provide an opportunity to delve into diverse string orchestra repertoire (which may not necessarily be explored in symphonic orchestral settings) and to provide a setting for like-minded musicians to connect and socialise, especially after performances!
We have performed three successful iterations of Sheffield Strings in 2024-2025 so far:
- November 2024 – Play-day with 45 musicians at Yellow Arch Studios – Ireland, Grieg, Arvo Part
- February/March 2025 – 2 Rehearsals and Concert at St Marie’s Cathedral – Elgar, Grieg, Ireland, Muse
- September 2025 – Intensive Rehearsal and Concert at St Marie’s Cathedral – Arvo Part, Sibelius, Schnittke
The demands of the repertoire performed and the nature of our intensive rehearsal/concert structure recommend adult players to be minimum Grade 6+ on their instrument.
When players sign-up to a project, the expectation is for players to learn the notes and bowings before the rehearsal/concert day.
Concerts are usually donation for the audience and a recommended player project donation is suggested for participants.
Feedback from players is greatly appreciated and warmly encouraged at the lunchtime and after concert socials.
The mailing list on the Sheffield Strings website is free and provides you with updates on future projects that are available to sign up to.
The music director for Sheffield Strings is River Edis-Smith.
