Sheffield University Singers’ Society
Sheffield University Singers’ Society (SingSoc) is one of Sheffield’s largest and most active choral communities, bringing together students, university staff, alumni and members of the wider Sheffield musical community through four distinct choirs: Chorus, Socii Cantorum, Melodia and Bombus.
Founded in 1998, the society provides a wide range of musical opportunities, from large-scale choral performances to focused ensemble singing, while remaining united as one welcoming and inclusive musical community.
Today, SingSoc supports well over one hundred singers each year and presents a varied programme of concerts spanning traditional choral repertoire, contemporary works, themed performances and collaborative projects. Recent and forthcoming programmes have included music by Handel, Poulenc, Benjamin Britten, Rheinberger, Bob Chilcott and Will Todd, alongside concerts exploring film music, popular repertoire and imaginative thematic programming.
Our four choirs allow the society to offer both exceptional breadth of opportunity and real depth of engagement:
- Chorus is our large-scale mixed-voice choir, combining ambitious musical projects with visible support for singers at every stage of their musical development.
- Socii Cantorum is our focused chamber ensemble, exploring repertoire in greater musical
- Melodia is our upper-voices choir, providing opportunities to explore the distinctive sound world of soprano and alto ensemble singing.
- Bombus is our lower-voices choir, offering a supportive, characterful and highly varied musical experience for tenor and bass singers.
One of the defining features of SingSoc is that none of our choirs require auditions. We believe singers thrive when they are given opportunities, guidance and encouragement, and we are proud to support musical development through professionally led rehearsals, learning resources and a strong culture of inclusion.
Alongside our musical work, we are committed to supporting the wider Sheffield music community. Through our fundraising at concerts and community events, we are proud to support Sheffield Music Hub, helping to create opportunities for young people across the city to access high-quality music education and participation.
As part of Sheffield’s rich musical landscape, SingSoc values collaboration with local ensembles, audiences and arts organisations, and warmly welcomes everyone who wishes to engage with our performances.
Many of our audience members, supporters and alumni continue to follow the society long after their time at university, and we are delighted to share our music with the wider Sheffield community.
Four choirs. One society. Many ways to belong.
