ORGANIZER;CN="Sheffield Symphony Orchestra":MAILTO:For Potential Players The SSO takes pride in the friendliness and supportive attitude between players. We believe this is why members have such long-standing loyalty and commitment to the orchestra. However, our membership does need to remain large enough to present the extensive repertoire we offer. In particular, we are looking to recruit more string players, especially violin and viola players of all ages. If you are interested, you can come along to a mutual trial period to see if it feels right. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from early September to late June, except during school holidays. To develop our orchestral sound, we plan to have day schools this season. This will be combined with social occasions to foster the orchestral camaraderie. We play to a high standard so players are expected to be a minimum level of grade 7 and usually around grade 8 or above. If the SSO’s description seems to match what you are looking for and you are curious, don’t hesitate to contact us via the website or Facebook, tweet us on Twitter, or call 07901 566960 to find out more.

SUMMARY:Where the Water Flows…
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Chamber Orchestra’s 75th anniversary concert features a collection of works connected with water\, including the world première of Dominic McGonigal: ‘Sunset at Sea’ \nWhere the Water Flows…\nTICKETS: £12.00\, STUDENTS/UNDER 18S £6.00 \nEcclesall Parish Church \nConductor: Laurence Perkins\nLeader: Ralph Dawson \nWe are absolutely delighted to perform for you the world première of a new composition by Dominic McGonigal — ‘Sunset at Sea’. Dominic’s work has been described as having “great textures and a perfect sense of spacing and pacing” and his ‘Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight’ recently won the Palimpsest Competition at Canterbury Cathedral. \nMendelssohn’s overture ‘Die Schöne Melusine’ loosely illustrates a German legend of a Melusine\, or a water-nymph who who marries a Count Raymond\, on the condition that he never enter her room on a Saturday as that is the day she takes on the form of a mermaid!! The opening passages seem to evoke ripples on water\, but in complete contrast you would also be right to conjure up the perfect coffee — the Starbucks logo features a Melusine at its centre. \nTelemann’s Water Music is the common name of an orchestral suite with the full title ‘Hamburger Ebb und Fluth’ (Hamburg’s ebb and flood) reflecting the town’s intimate links with its river Elbe. Despite Hamburg being nearly 100 miles from the coast its river is tidal\, and the overture begins by representing the physical movement of the ocean. There follows several movements with nautical themes including: Thetis\, a sea goddess; Neptune\, a sea god; playful water nymphs; Neptune’s son and sea messenger Triton; as well as one depicting the tides of Hamburg and another its happy sailors. \nWagner composed ‘Siegfried Idyll’ as a Christmas present for for his wife after the birth of their son in 1869. It was originally scored for 13 players\, but Wagner expanded it to 35 when it was published. \nSeascape\, by the English composer Ruth Gipps\, conjures up the beauty as well as the stormy nature of the sea. It is thought to have been inspired by a trip she took to Kent where she was giving lectures; and during her stay in a coastal hotel in Broadstairs she would hear the sea from her bed. The work which has a wonderfully rich rhythmic and percussive central section and was composed in 1958 for an ensemble of ten wind players. \nWilliam Sterndale Bennett was born in Sheffield in the early 19th century — a nice local connection. When you’ve listened to his piece ‘The Naiades Overture’ you’ll understand why he was admired by both Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. Naiades are a type of female spirit or nymph in Greek mythology\, who preside over fountains\, wells\, springs\, streams\, brooks and other bodies of fresh water. \nJohann Strauss II is the famous Strauss and we are performing his water themed waltzes the ‘Nordseebilder’. This was inspired by his visit to the North Frisian island of Föhr. The slow introduction suggests a calm sea scene\, while swirling waves are captured in later themes. The coda incorporates a ‘sea storm’ scene\, with furious chords and fierce brass instruments suggesting the North Sea at the time of a severe gale. \nThe full programme for the evening is: \nMendelssohn: ‘Die Schöne Melusine’ \nWagner: Siegfried Idyll \nTelemann: Water Music \nRuth Gipps: Seascape \nWilliam Sterndale Bennett: The Naiades \nJohann Strauss II: Nordseebilder \nThe world première of Dominic McGonigal: ‘Sunset at Sea’ \nTHIS CONCERT IS SPONSORED BY AGINCARE and TURNER VIOLINS

SUMMARY:Echoes of the Isles: Hallam Sinfonia
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to do our first concert with guest conductor (and Yorkshire native) Ben Crick. This programme explores aspects of the British coast (Hebrides\, Tintagel)\, and also pieces connected with British landscapes but which have references to war: Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad is about a young man who goes off to war\, and Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony is often thought to relate to the landscapes of the Somme. \n

SUMMARY:Accent on Youth
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Chamber Orchestra is delighted to welcome not one but four young soloists for tonight’s concert from the Sheffield Music Hub and the Sheffield Music Academy. \nEmma Rae Ward will be singing from the “Chants d’Auvergne” (“Songs from the Auvergne”)\, a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France arranged for soprano voice and orchestra by Joseph Canteloube between 1923-1930. The songs are in the local mediaeval language Auvergnat\, a dialect of Occitan. \nCellist Perris Heath is playing Fauré’s Élégie. Originally composed for Cello and Piano\, Fauré was asked for a version for cello and orchestra which was premiered in April 1901\, with none other than Pablo Casals as a soloist and the composer as conductor. \nMabel Bailey will delight on her flute with a Ballade by Carl Reinecke\, one of the most influential and versatile musicians of the second half of the 19th century. Ballade is charming and tuneful. Reinecke understood the instrument very well. \nDaniella Arnold joins us to share Massenet’s “Méditation”. The piece was originally composed as a symphonic intermezzo from the opera Thaïs and comes at the point when Athanaël\, a Cenobite monk\, has just confronted Thaïs\, a beautiful and hedonistic courtesan and a devotée of Venus\, and attempted to persuade her to leave her life of luxury and pleasure and find salvation through God. This piece is her meditating on this idea. Today it is considered to be one of the great encore pieces. \nIn addition to this feast\, the orchestra will be playing Bonis’s Bourrée and Mendelssohn’s first Symphony. \nThe full programme for the evening is:\nFauré: Élégie (Cello)\nBonis: Bourrée (Orchestra)\nMassenet: Méditation from Thaïs (Violin)\nReinecke: Ballade (Flute)\nCanteloube: Songs of the Auvergne (Soprano)\nMendelssohn: Symphony No. 1 (Orchestra)

SUMMARY:Sheffield Chamber Orchestra Masterworks Concert
DESCRIPTION:Four masterpieces feature in tonight’s concert and we are delighted to welcome back Tim Horton as our fabulous soloist. This concert is not to be missed! \nWe begin with Mozart’s overture to his opera “Cosi fan tutte”. Full of Mozart’s usual brio\, brimming with energy as well as being fun\, fast\, lively\, and with plenty of gorgeous syncopated contrasts\, his tunes make full use of the treble end of our orchestra. Next we have Delius’ tone poem “On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring”  Sir Thomas Beecham said that this work “touched perfection.” \nTim Horton is our fabulous soloist tonight. Tim is one of the UK’s leading pianists https://timhortonpianist.co.uk/ We’re playing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto. This is a beautiful romantic piece that gives room to the orchestra\, without diminishing the role of the piano. \nFinally we are playing Beethoven’s Symphony No 2 in D. Beethoven finished composing his second symphony when he was starting to go beyond the established classical music conventions of his time and composing with a bolder more individual voice. From this point on his works increasingly grapple with human themes such as struggle\, assertion\, or celebration. Listen out for the rich melodic themes in the slow second movement and  the energetic dancing scherzo. \nThe full programme for the evening is: – \nMozart: Overture ‘Cosi fan tutte’\nDelius: On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring Schumann: Piano Concerto \nINTERVAL\nBeethoven: Symphony No. 2 in D\, Op. 36
