SUMMARY:Spooky Men's Chorale
DESCRIPTION:A magnificent\, many headed beast which has single-handedly turned the world of men’s singing upside down.\nBypassing well trodden avenues\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale carve out new territories of mighty man sounds\, exquisite tenderness and charming stupidity to both celebrate and mock masculinity. \nFormed in New South Wales in 2001 the Spookies have become rock solid festival and theatre favourites throughout Australia\, Europe and the UK with 7 albums and 900 gigs under their belts. \nNo subject is too trivial or weighty for their attention\, and such ability to find new musical rooms to explore contributes greatly to their astonishing fan loyalty. \nThe show evokes musical worlds far beyond that suggested by their unassuming\, casually hatted\, black clad appearance. They’re just a bunch of blokes but where they take you will blow your mind. \n“Sheer musical excellence. Like the ghosts of choristers long gone” Sydney Morning Herald \n“Don’t miss an opportunity to see them” Daily Telegraph

SUMMARY:Mostar Sevdah Reunion
DESCRIPTION:The pioneers of 21st century sevdah.\nMostar Sevdah Reunion is an exceptional collective of artists united by a single\, profound passion. Some might say they live for Sevdah—that this centuries-old music is not merely their vocation\, but their reason for being. Interpreting and presenting a musical tradition more than 400 years old\, rooted in Bosnia and Herzegovina\, is no easy task. Yet despite war\, loss\, and countless obstacles\, Mostar Sevdah Reunion has endured. \nThe story begins in 1993 when Dragi Šestić\, the producer and founder of the band\, recorded an audiocassette with a couple of tracks that were distributed in limited edition among their friends. Those were the times of war in the Balkans\, and the reason for recording was just a getaway episode to momentarily forget all the atrocities and suffering. Then\, they made the promise that “the whole world will know about Sevdah” – one day when the war would come to an end. They fulfilled the promise and recorded their first album\, “Mostar Sevdah Reunion\,” in 1998. Since that day\, they have been captivating their audiences wherever they go.

SUMMARY:Neil Cowley Trio: Built on Bach
DESCRIPTION:Built on Bach is an evening of Neil Cowley Trio music using Bach’s work as a ‘jumping off point’ for their iconic jazz sound.\n“He was the beginning of it all – the fundament to my technique and the core of my musicality”. Neil Cowley didn’t realise the profound impact that Johann Sebastian Bach had on his career until he stumbled upon his gravestone in Leipzig\, Germany. Cowley is a man of duplicity\, as he says\, “the heart-felt jazz-soul-blues stuff: and the head\, the classical” ( Interview with Andy Robson\, Jazzwise)\nFormed in the late 2000s\, the Neil Cowley Trio released their first studio album in June 2006\, through Cowley’s own record label\, Hide Inside Records. After the original album established Cowley as a dazzling pianist and stunning composer\, he examined the possibilities of the acoustic piano trio and created a unique trademark sound that delivered powerful music of massive dynamic range and contrast. At the heart of their captivating live performances is Cowley’s marvellously English wit\, mischievous humour and remarkable rapport with his audience.\nHaving taken time for a solo career exploring electronics and contemporary classical music\, Cowley came back to his trio and brought all he’d learned to develop their existing jazz style. Using Bach’s original pieces as a starting point\, together with his bandmates Rex Horan (bass) and Evan Jenkins (drums)\, new compositions took place. Built on Bach is the result of this – a 16-date UK tour that runs through April 2026 featuring brand new music with Bach at its heart\, filtered through the Neil Cowley Trio lens. As with all of Cowley’s music\, Bach’s presence is felt – not imitated. This will be a show combining the classic jazz sound of the Neil Cowley Trio with the sound of the most classic composer of them all; Johann Sebastian Bach.

SUMMARY:Sarah Watts & Kim Davenport
DESCRIPTION:Renowned clarinet and piano duo bring a complete programme of music by black composers to Firth Hall.\nProgramme: \nThe Song Also Rises \nBass Clarinet – Sarah Watts \nPiano – Kim Davenport \n6 Sorrow Songs – Samuel Coleridge-Taylor \nThe Mindlessness of it All – Malcolm J. Solomon \nInterval \n6 Songs – Florence Price \nAnd Then … – David Baker \nThe Song Also Rises is a performance of music by black composers. The Album was recorded in Tacoma\, USA\, and released in August 2025. This performance brings the complete album to a live UK concert setting\, \n“The Song Also Rises is as literal an album as it is a play on words\, an overdue elevation of forgotten or underperformed (recently discovered) masterworks from composers of the past and present who share lived experiences\, social conditions\, and an innate ability to integrate musical stylings of their time that continue to provide the foundation for music being written in the classical tradition for the 21st century. Watts and Davenport rise to the musical occasion by performing on the shoulders of luminaries Samuel Coleridge Taylor\, Florence Price\, David Baker\, and Malcolm Solomon. Between the four composers\, listeners are privy to the musical and social conversations from people of African descent spanning 150 years. These musical conversations – reflecting the cyclical nature of society – fuse Negro spirituals\, romanticism\, and post modernism with poetry in a manner that gives listeners an unseen and perhaps\, unheard hope for a future that forges a new song/social cycle. One that reveres the once despised. One that honors the once disdained and elevates the once downtrodden”. \n– Joshua Thompson \nBass clarinet specialist Sarah Watts has gained an international reputation as an artist\, teacher and researcher on the instrument. She has received numerous awards during her career\, from being awarded the Exxon prize for best classical music student at Rotterdam Conservatorium to Winning the UK Howarth Clarinet competition. As well as an impressive solo performance career\, Watts also performs with Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble\, rarescale and SCAW. Recently\, she joined forces with composer Dr Elizabeth Kelly to create a musical tribute to the iconic cooling towers of the now-decommissioned Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire. Watts performed their two works inside one of the cooling towers – a feat that earned a feature on Classic FM. \nKim Davenport is a pianist\, teacher\, writer and composer based in Washington. As a soloist and collaborative artist\, she is committed to exploring and sharing works by under-represented composers\, with a particular focus on music by black composers. She was active for nearly 20 years in the critically acclaimed Duo Alea\, the bass clarinet and piano duo she formed with her father. The Duo’s performances and recordings brought local and world premieres of several important works for bass clarinet and piano. In 2020\, following her father’s passing\, Davenport reinvigorated the Alea catalog with a focus of underrepresented composers\, and established the Dolphy prize for new works for bass clarinet by black composers.

SUMMARY:Prattyush Banerjee\, Giuliano Modarelli & Gurdain Rayatt
DESCRIPTION:Scintillating crossover collaboration between three virtuoso’s at their respective instruments: guitar\, tabla and sarod.\nPrattyush Banerjee\, a master musician\, is at once a virtuoso of the modern sarod\, a skilled composer\, and someone who has evolved the design of his instrument into the twenty-first century. He has contributed scores for Bollywood movies (Piku\, Madras Café)\, collaborated with countless other musicians\, and recently invented an electrified version of the sarod\, the jyotidhwani. Born in Kolkata\, the young Prattyush was immersed in music from an early age\, with his father being a renowned record collector. He began studying the sarod aged eight. \nGiuliano Modarelli is a virtuosic guitarist\, composer\, producer\, and educator from Italy. His music transcends genres\, embracing cultural exchange and collaboration. He has worked alongside such names as Shankar Mahadevan\, Bill Laurance\, Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney. Giuliano is the co-founder of Kefaya\, an award-winning collective that (together with Hazara singer Elaha Soroor) fuses Afghan folk traditions with jazz\, electronic music\, and psychedelic rock. Here he reunites with his teacher and mentor in Hindustani music\, Prattyush. \nBorn in the UK\, Gurdain Rayatt is one of the leading tabla players and teachers in UK and Europe performing internationally with renowned Indian Classical musicians as well as world/crossover and fusion projects spanning several genres. He has accompanied legends of the Indian Classical music world including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan\, Ustad Shahid Parvez\, Pandit Birju Maharaj\, Pandit Kushal Das\, Rakesh Chaurasia\, Purbayan Chatterjee\, Niladri Kumar\, Anoushka Shankar and many more. Gurdain has been teaching for over 10 years\, bringing the joy of tabla to his students. \nGiuliano will perform 20 minutes as a tribute to his teacher\, before introducing Prattyush onstage\, with Gurdain accompanying throughout. This promises to be an unmissable evening of music from three adventurous performers\, operating at the height of their musicianship.

SUMMARY:Grass: Live film score with Peyman Yazdanian & Adib Rostami
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the silent masterpiece Grass (1925) with live music by Peyman Yazdanian and Adib Rostami\n“This is our Iranian story and we must continue to tell it in new\, creative ways” \nDiscover this reimagining of the silent masterpiece Grass: A Nation’s Battle for Life (1925)\, a documentary on the heroic annual migration of the nomadic Bakhtiari tribes of Iran. Screened in a brand-new restoration courtesy of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and accompanied by new live score by Peyman Yazdanian and Adib Rostami. \nThis incredible film\, absorbing and shocking\, had only one problem – the score. Yazdanian first listened to Patrick Holcomb’s 2021 score for the film\, and he found it “so disturbing and orientalist [he] had to turn it off and continue in total silence“. He knew it needed something new. Yazdanian’s score is a radical new idea: an improvised piano and kamancheh duet\, played live at each show and adapting and responding to feelings in the moment. The kamancheh is an Iranian string instrument\, played in this performance by Adib Rostami\, who also plays the tombak (an Iranian hand drum) in more dramatic moments. Alongside Yazdanian’s piano\, these instruments create a blend of east and west\, “much like the journey of these western film-makers\, following the tribes to the remotest parts of Iran” (Yazdanian). \nBook now to discover the impact a new score can have on a 100-year-old film.

SUMMARY:Alice Zawadzki\, Fred Thomas & Misha Mullov-Abbado
DESCRIPTION:Alice Zawadzki\, a vocalist & violinist with considerable repute as “a genuine original” teams up with two long-term collaborators – sought-after multi-instrumentalist Fred Thomas and award-winning jazz bass player Misha Mullov-Abbado.\nIn association with Sheffield Jazz \nThree singular voices collide in Za Górami\, the captivating trio of Alice Zawadzki\, Fred Thomas and Misha Mullov-Abbado. Za Górami (“Beyond the Mountains”) draws on fragments of half-forgotten melodies that have echoed through centuries and across borders\, once passed from mouth to mouth\, reshaped by trauma and joy. Collected from their unique lineages\, and honed over a decade of working together\, the trio carry these songs with reverence but never politeness\, summoning the past to brush viscerally against the present. \nAn ancient and cryptic rallying cry\, Za Górami summons something transcendental\, reminiscent of “Once upon a time…” In this spirit of openness\, these tales unfold\, invoking the moon\, the madness of humans and the prophecies of birds. \nAt the heart is award-winning singer and fiddle player Alice Zawadzki. Described by MOJO Magazine as “something of a phenomenon”\, her voice glides between whispered intimacy and feral power\, at once siren and folk oracle. With “extreme sensitivity to colour and nuance” (BBC Music Magazine)\, Fred Thomas shapeshifts as pianist\, percussionist and player of the medieval vielle\, an ancient bowed string instrument descended from Byzantine and Arabic ancestors. The “unfailingly inventive” (The Telegraph) double-bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado draws the music earthward with deep\, physical grooves that pulse and flicker. \nInhabiting the rich crossroads between folksong\, jazz improvisation and classical chamber music\, they are intimate one moment\, explosive the next. Live\, the trio blur the lines between gig\, ritual and late-night confession and have been described as a “a model of cliché-free beauty and gossamer-fine communication” (Bayerischer Rundfunk)\, qualities that led them to Manfred Eicher and the iconic ECM Records\, with whom they released this exquisite collection in 2024. Since that release\, the word continues to spread about their electric live performances\, with London Jazz News declaring them “a supergroup trio of mesmerising intensity”.

SUMMARY:Musica Antica Rotherhithe
DESCRIPTION:La Decima Musa\, or The Tenth Muse: Music from the Golden Age of Venetian Opera\, 1650-1660\nMusica Antica Rotherhithe present cantatas and extracts from operas written for Venice’s public theatres in the mid-seventeenth century\, many of which have lain unperformed for over 350 years. Using surviving payment records from venetian theatres\, Mezzo Camilla Seale and countertenor Tristram Cooke will be accompanied by an ensemble which matches a Venetian theatre band of the time as closely as possible\, comprising two violins\, bass viol\, two theorbos\, harpsichord and a pentagonal virginal. \nMusica Antica Rotherhithe was founded by Oliver Doyle and Jessica Eucker in 2016 with the aim of presenting affordable\, accessible concerts of rarely heard music from the fifteenth\, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Since then\, it has created a popular home for lesser-known repertoire in South East London; alongside regular concerts\, they have staged the anonymous one-act venetian comedy Lo Spedale (2018\, 2019 & 2024) and given several works their UK or modern premiere. These include Michelangelo Falvetti’s Diluvio Universale (2020); Domenico Belli’s Orfeo Dolente (2021); Alessandro Striggio’s Cicalamento delle Donne al Buccato (2024) and Antonio Draghi’s L’Humanità Redenta. Where modern scores for these works do not exist\, Musica Antica create performing editions complete with translations and critical notes\, which are made freely available online thanks to the Cavalli Charity. This concert has been made possible by the Continuo Foundation. \nDoors 7\, performance 7.30 \nProgramme \nFrancesco Cavalli (1602 – 1676) \nCantata: Se la giù negl’abissi \nTorindo\, ove s’in via\, from Orimonte (1650) \nDolce Frode\, from Eritrea (1652) \nAhi questo è il fine amaro\, from Erismena (1655) \nBarbara Strozzi (1619 -1677) \nEraclito Amoroso\, from Cantate\, ariette\, e duetti (1651) \nFrancesco Lucio (1628 – 1658) \nDonne belle e vezzose from Medoro (1658) \nDa Amorose Passione\, from Medoro (1658) \nPietro Andrea Ziani (1616 – 1684) \nRodope\, dove sei\, from Le Fortune di Rodope e Damira (1657) \nMarmi spietati from Le Fortune di Rodope e Damira (1657) \nEnsemble \nMezzo: Camilla Seale \nCountertenor: Tristram Cooke \nViolin: Andrew Taheny & Sophia Mücke \nBass viol: Harry Buckoke \nTheorbo: Kristiina Watt & Jonatan Bougt \nKeyboards: Luke Mitchell & Oliver Doyle

DESCRIPTION:An electrifying and electrified evening of duets between soloists drawn from Ensemble 360\, and tape or live electronics\, all presented in multi-speaker\, 360-degree surround-sound. \n Saariaho’s energetic and colourful Petals for cello is as invigorating as it is haunting\, while Boulez creates an intricate dance between the clarinet and its own shadow in his Dialogue de l’ombre double. Bassoonist Emily Hultmark brings to life the desire of Sibelius that “every note must live” in her own work that combines bassoon\, electronics and the Finnish composer’s words. The Music in the Round concert concludes with one of Luigi Nono’s final works: his monumental in-the-round piece for violin and eight tapes is by turns sparse\, intricate\, beautiful and thrilling.
