SUMMARY:SOUNDS OF NOW: KONNAKOL\, DRUM KIT & CODE
DESCRIPTION:Music in the Round presents newly-composed work for Konnakol (vocal percussive music from the South Indian Carnatic tradition)\, live-coded electronic music and percussion. Common to these disparate traditions is an interest in pattern\, texture and complex rhythm\, which mridangam and konnakol artist BC Manjunath\, live-coder Alex McLean and drummer Matt Davies will explore through a unique and virtuosic live performance.

SUMMARY:SONGS OF LOVE
DESCRIPTION:Programme includes\nDVOŘÁK (arr. Matthews) Love Songs (18’)\nDEBUSSY Trois poèmes de Stéphane Malllarmé (13’)\nMUSSORGSKY The Nursery (selection) (10’)\nDEBUSSY String Quartet (25’) \nClaire Booth is a singer celebrated around the world for her distinctive and characterful voice and the relentless curiosity in the range of work she presents. In recent years she has become a frequent collaborator with Ensemble 360\, including a much-lauded CD release Pierrot Portraits. As they prepare for Music in the Round’s Sheffield Chamber Music Festival 2026\, of which Claire is Guest Curator\, they present a dazzling evening of French chamber music. \nIn 1913 Debussy and Ravel began a somewhat friendly rivalry to set three poems by Stéphane Mallarmé\, whose words\, like the music of these great French composers\, explored the same shimmering textures beloved of their contemporary impressionist painters. Ravel’s Chansons madécasses – one of the most popular works in SCMF 2024 – opens this sensuous celebration of light and love which concludes with Debussy’s glittering string quartet.

SUMMARY:QUARTET FOR THE END OF TIME
DESCRIPTION:KLEIN String Trio (12’)\nSMIT Trio for Clarinet\, Viola and Piano (12’)\nMESSIAEN Quartet for the End of Time (50’) \nOlivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is the centrepiece of this Music in the Round concert showcasing music to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the internment\, concentration and death camps of Europe. Considered one of the 20th century’s greatest works\, Messiaen composed the Quartet while a prisoner of war in the Stalag VIII-A camp. As Steven Osborne writes\, “the music seems to touch the far edges of human experience”. Also featured in the programme is Gideon Klien’s folk-infused String Trio\, composed just ten days before Klien was transported from Terezín to Auschwitz\, and Leo Smit’s lyrical and profoundly expressive Trio for Clarinet\, Viola and Piano.

SUMMARY:FINALE - MOZART\, BEETHOVEN & ELGAR: Ensemble 360
DESCRIPTION:In a nostalgic nod to Ensemble 360’s beginnings\, the group revisits the music from their very first concert in this 20th anniversary Festival Finale. The first of Mozart’s virtuosic flute quartets opens the evening\, followed by a warm and witty work by Beethoven. The Finale culminates with a burst of energy in Elgar’s glorious Piano Quintet. \nPerformed by the group in 2005\, shortly after its establishment by Music in the Round\, this concert was specifically curated to showcase the breadth and diversity of Sheffield’s stunning new resident ensemble. This ‘repeat’ performance of the same joyous music celebrates Ensemble 360 and highlights the group’s extraordinary musical strengths once more. \nProgramme:\nMOZART Flute Quartet in D K285 (15′)\nBEETHOVEN Quintet for Piano and Wind Op.16 (30′)\nELGAR Piano Quintet Op.84 (40′)

SUMMARY:SINFONIETTA: BRITTEN\, VAUGHAN WILLIAMS & MORE: Ensemble 360
DESCRIPTION:This sumptuous exploration of an intricate musical family tree unpacks the influence of some of the 20th century’s greatest composers upon one another. The shimmering colours of Ravel’s exquisite Piano Trio\, which drew on eclectic sources including Basque folk dance and Malaysian verse-forms\, was highly influential in helping that most English of composers\, Ralph Vaughan Williams\, to find his own musical voice. While Benjamin Britten\, whose student Oliver Knussen opens this Music in the Round concert\, wrestled with and resisted the legacy of Vaughan Williams throughout his life\, his echoes can be heard\, not least in this early taut and twitchy work that brings this programme to a swaggering conclusion.

SUMMARY:BRAHMS STRING SEXTET: Ensemble 360 & Members of the Elias Quartet
DESCRIPTION:In a final chance to catch the members of the Elias Quartet in collaboration with Ensemble 360\, this celebration of music for strings centres on Brahms’s spectacular Sextet. Marked by heartbreak and romance\, the piece sweeps from the wistful longing of the early movements to the warm and tender triumph of the dazzling fourth movement. Paired with Enescu’s prodigious and intricately structured epic\, this luscious Music in the Round evening of string writing showcases the technical brilliance and big-hearted musicianship that has grown across two decades of collaboration among these very special players. \nProgramme:\nBRAHMS String Sextet in G (40′)\nENESCU String Octet in C (40′)

SUMMARY:SHOSTAKOVICH\, MOZART & MORE: Ensemble 360 & Members of the Elias Quartet
DESCRIPTION:With Ensemble 360 once again joined by members of the Elias String Quartet\, this is an expansive programme of some of the most exciting writing for strings from the 20th century\, interspersed with two very different\, but equally glorious\, works for piano and wind. \nMozart’s majestic Quintet was\, according to a letter he wrote to his father shortly after its first performance\, a piece he considered one of the finest he had ever written. Poulenc’s profound and stylish late Oboe Sonata is an elegy both to its dedicatee Prokofiev and a farewell to life itself\, being the composer’s final work. Early pieces shot through with spirituality and revolution (by Shostakovich and Schoenberg\, both of whom celebrate anniversaries in 2025) bookend this Music in the Round concert. \nProgramme:\nSHOSTAKOVICH Two Pieces for String Octet (10′)\nMOZART Quintet for Piano and Wind in E flat K452 (20′)\nPOULENC Oboe Sonata (13’)\nSCHOENBERG Verklärte Nacht (30′)

SUMMARY:CYCLES & CIRCLES: Jasdeep Singh Degun & Ensemble 360
DESCRIPTION:Jasdeep Singh Degun is one of the finest exponents of the sitar and one of the most exciting musicians working today. His many collaborations with players from both Indian and western classical traditions have earned him broad audiences and many prizes\, including two prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society awards in 2024. Following his sold-out Playhouse debut with tabla player Harkiret Singh Bahra in spring 2024\, he returns for a new Music in the Round collaboration with the string players of Ensemble 360 to mark their 20th birthday.

DESCRIPTION:Members of the celebrated Elias Quartet join forces with their friends and former colleagues in Ensemble 360 for this very special Music in the Round concert. Barber’s sumptuous and iconic Adagio also features\, alongside Copland’s large-scale chamber suite\, Appalachian Spring. Originally a ballet score\, it’s a celebration of peace and freedom\, and a depiction of Appalachia that weaves together folk melodies in a joyous\, life-affirming piece. \nProgramme:\nBARBER Canzonetta op.48 (8′)\nSTRAUSS Metamorphosen (septet version) (25′)\nBARBER Adagio from String Quartet Op.11 (9′)\nCOPLAND Appalachian Spring (30′)

SUMMARY:BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN: Ensemble 360 & George Morton\, conductor
DESCRIPTION:Legendary Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein’s silent masterpiece tells the heroic story of the 1905 rebellion of the crew of the Potemkin. The film is most famous for its iconic fourth act\, a dramatic montage of visceral images of the crushing of the uprising in Odessa and the citizenry’s last stand on the stark stone steps. \nA technical masterpiece\, and Soviet cinema at its finest\, Music in the Round is screening this influential and visionary piece of cinema with the original soundtrack performed live by Ensemble 360 to mark the film’s centenary year. \nProgramme:\nMEISEL (arr. SUMMARY:SCHUMANN & RAVEL - MOTHER GOOSE: Ensemble 360
DESCRIPTION:This afternoon Music in the Round concert begins with the ‘Mother Goose’ Suite. Ravel’s delightful\, whimsical work sets fairytales to music\, performed here in a chamber arrangement. Starting life as a composition for piano four hands\, and best known in an orchestral version\, this chamber arrangement has been a favourite of players and audiences alike over the decades. Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat\, widely considered to be his greatest chamber work\, is an epic piano concerto in quintet form: serene\, reflective and ultimately exultant. \nProgramme:\nRAVEL (arr. SUMMARY:INTIMATE LETTERS: Ensemble 360
DESCRIPTION:Janáček’s intricate second quartet – nicknamed ‘Intimate Letters’ – is skilfully interspersed with the Czech composer’s own writing\, performed by an actor\, in this specially scripted performance of the work for Ensemble 360 with actor. \n The introspection and innovation evident in so much of Janáček’s work is brought to life through a compelling combination of words with music. \nSchubert’s final and perhaps finest chamber work\, his sublime quintet for two violins\, viola and two cellos\, is one of his most highly prized works: pensive\, symphonic\, intricately structured and ultimately exuberant and triumphant. This glorious afternoon with Music in the Round celebrates the epic within the intimate in two dramatic gems of chamber music repertoire. \nProgramme:\n SCHUBERT Quintet in C D956 (50’)\nJANÁČEK String Quartet No.2 ‘Intimate Letters’ (with script by Paul Allen) (50′)

SUMMARY:20 YEARS OF ENSEMBLE 360: FESTIVAL LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Schubert’s rousing Octet (perhaps the piece most closely associated with Ensemble 360 over their two decades) showcases the range and breadth of the ensemble\, with its jaunty\, memorable tunes and high drama. It is coupled here with two works written especially for the group. \nHuw Watkins’ Broken Consort premiered in 2008 and features different instrument groups and fanfares\, before all 11 Ensemble 360 players come together for the exuberant finale. It is followed by the world premiere of a brand-new commission from Royal Philharmonic Society 2024 Composer Aileen Sweeney. A great way to start the 20th birthday celebrations! \nTo celebrate 20 years of extraordinary music-making\, ticket-holders are invited to join Music in the Round for a free glass of wine or soft drink in the Crucible bar after the concert. \nProgramme:\nWATKINS Broken Consort (20′)\nSWEENEY New Work [World Premiere] (10’)\nSCHUBERT Octet (60’)

SUMMARY:CONTRASTS performed by Claire Booth & Ensemble 360
DESCRIPTION:Separated by a few short years and the turn of a century\, this concert features two utterly different string quartets from two modernist giants who typify the staggering range of fin de siècle classical music. \nSchoenberg’s visionary second quartet sees Ensemble 360 joined by superstar soprano Claire Booth for a surprisingly accessible and personal work that stretches from the intimate to the interstellar. Debussy’s sensual and impressionistic quartet shimmers with life and light between opening storms and a grand conclusion. \nClaire Booth \nBritish soprano Claire Booth has become internationally renowned both for her commitment to an extraordinary breadth of repertoire\, and for the vitality and musicianship that she brings to the operatic stage and concert platform. In the 2019-20 season alone her diverse schedule included Benjamin’s A Mind of Winter with The Hong Kong Philharmonic\, a streamed 5 star performance of Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine for Grange Park Opera\, The title role in Handel’s Berenice for ROH\, the critically acclaimed recording of Grieg songs\, performances of Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tippett’s Child of Our Time with the CBSO. \nEnsemble 360\nEnsemble 360 has gained an enviable reputation across the UK for the quality and integrity of their performances. Formed in 2005\, eleven musicians of international standing came together to take up residency in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round\, establishing a versatile group comprising five string players\, five wind players and a pianist.
