SUMMARY:Choral Jukebox
DESCRIPTION:The choir of St John’s will be singing… well\, whatever you ask them to. \nLike with any traditional jukebox\, there will be a list of available pieces from which to choose (in exchange for a donation). \nBut\, perhaps like a more modern jukebox\, there is a wider world of music out there and we might be able to sing your off-menu selection\, copyright and other constraints permitting. But it will cost you… \nFree admission (with retiring collection in aid of our the Inspire Project – a fund that is raising money for urgent repair work to our iconic spire) but you can pay to hear the music you want to hear!

SUMMARY:Sheffield Bach Choir perform Haydn's 'Nelson Mass' and Willcocks' 'A Great and Glorious Victory'
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Bach Choir are pleased to open the season with Haydn’s wonderful Nelson Mass\, written in 1798 when Haydn was nearing the end of his life and at the peak of his powers. Austria had been defeated by Napoleon in four battles at the time of writing\, and Haydn referred to the work as ‘A Mass for troubled times’. However\, Nelson defeated Napoleon shortly before the first performance\, and this coincidence led to the name by which the work became widely known. The opening depicts danger and agitation\, while the drama of later movements calls to mind triumphant victory. \nAlso on the programme is A Great and Glorious Victory by conductor and composer Jonathan Willcocks\, whose works have been published and widely performed across the world. \nWith the National Festival Orchestra and Peter Shepherd on the organ\, this concert is one not to miss! \n\nSheffield Bach Choir\nNational Festival Orchestra\nPeter Heginbotham – organ\nJane Burnell – soprano\nAilsa Mainwaring – alto\nNicholas Watts – tenor\nWilliam Burn – bass\nPhilip Collin – conductor\n\nTickets  cost £18 (adults) £16 (concessions) and £8 (students); children under 12 accompanied by a ticket holder are FREE. \nTickets are available online\, from members of the choir\, on the door\, or by post via The Box Office\, Sheffield Bach Society\, c/o 3 Tapton Mews\, Sheffield\, S10 5EA. enclosing a cheque and stamped addressed envelope.
