SUMMARY:WRE SALON | TRANSITION - West Riding Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:If we look for a transitional figure between ‘classical’ and ‘romantic’ styles\, Beethoven (1770-1827) is often picked by default\, while Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-91) tends to be regarded as a prime – and exquisitely skilful – exponent of the pure classical style. But this belies the innovation within much of Mozart’s music. \nAs with our pairing last season of Mozart’s 40th symphony and Mendelssohn’s famous violin concerto\, in this concert we explore how Mozart touches on the kind of elegiac\, lyrical romanticisms found throughout music of the nineteenth century. Following our performances of the clarinet quintet earlier this year\, we also delve again into Mozart’s fascination with the clarinet\, which transformed it into a fully-fledged solo\, chamber\, and orchestral voice. His ‘Dissonance’ quartet also pre-figures elements of increasing complexity in nineteenth-century German and Austrian composition\, especially in its highly chromatic opening. \nWritten just over a century on from the Mozart works\, we have the opus 1 quartet for violin\, clarinet\, cello and piano – the instrumentation perhaps most famously used by Olivier Messiaen in his Quatuor pour la fin du temps (1941) – by Viennese composer Walter Rabl (1873-1940). Rabl is a minor and quite obscure figure\, but this work of 1896\, which won Brahms’ endorsement\, is ‘transitional’ in that it represented a fast-disappearing ancien-regime of classically-rooted style and composition in Vienna\, soon to be dominated by the more progressive tendencies of Gustav Mahler\, Richard Strauss\, Erich Korngold\, and others\, whom Rabl himself championed as a conductor. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, this concert gives a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model. \nPROGRAMME\nMOZART: Trio K498 ‘Kegelstatt’ (c.21′)\nMOZART: String Quartet K465 ‘Dissonance’ (c.30′)\nRABL: Quartet op. 1 for piano\, violin\, clarinet\, and cello (c.26′) \nPERFORMERS\nDavid Milsom\, violin & viola\nLiza Costanzo\, violin\nCharlotte Kenyon\, viola\nTom Collingwood\, cello\nSofia Nikolaeva\, clarinet\nJonathan Gooing\, piano\nRuth Milsom\, piano

SUMMARY:Sonority Presents: Fire Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Experience an evening of captivating choral music as Sonority Choir\, one of Sheffield’s finest upper‑voice ensembles\, presents Fire Flowers— a choral journey of resilience and renewal inspired by the restorative power of nature’s beauty. \nAt the heart of the programme is Don Macdonald’s powerful song cycle Fire Flowers. Taking its title from the delicate wildflowers that bloom on a forest floor after a devastating fire\, the work reflects on the astonishing ways life re‑emerges where hope once seemed impossible. Alongside Macdonald’s cycle\, the programme features a beautifully set version of Wendell Berry’s The Peace of Wild Things and works by Reena Esmail\, Lydia Samuels\, Winnie Brückner\, Laura Hawley\, and Katerina Gimon. \nThis evocative concert weaves together music that reflects the everyday challenges we all carry\, those quiet\, unspoken moments that shape us and the collective calls for social change and the righting of wrongs. It also draws on the healing strength of the natural world: how\, in times of overwhelm or uncertainty\, we turn instinctively to birdsong\, open skies\, and quiet forests for comfort and peace. With Fire Flowers\, Sonority offers a programme that highlights shared threads of hope\, and invites audiences to pause\, reflect\, and witness the beauty that can rise after even the fiercest storms. \nKnown for imaginative programming and captivating performances\, Sonority Choir brings together exceptional singers to champion innovative music for women’s voices. Since its founding in 2019\, the ensemble has become recognised for its bold artistic vision\, warm choral blend\, and emotionally resonant concerts that honour tradition while embracing contemporary expression.

SUMMARY:WRE SALON | CLASSICAL TRADITIONS - West Riding Ensemble Quartet with Sofia Nikolaeva
DESCRIPTION:In this concert WRE reverts to its core identity as a project-based chamber ensemble. In 2025\, West Riding Ensemble founder members David Milsom\, Maria Nikolaeva\, Charlotte Kenyon\, and George Kennaway undertook a string quartet tour of works by Beethoven\, Dvořák\, and Shostakovich; now they perform two more favourites of the repertoire: Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor\, and Mendelssohn’s op. 12 string quartet. \nIn the genial and conversational Mozart Clarinet Quintet they are joined by young clarinetist Sofia Nikolaeva in her chamber music debut with WRE. Look out for Sofia in further events in the 2026-2027 season as the ensemble focuses on mixed chamber music for strings and wind. \nJoin us after this concert for a drinks and nibbles reception\, where you can meet and chat to the musicians. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, this concert gives a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model\, and pays students a fair fee for their work. \nPROGRAMME\nSCHUBERT: Quartettsatz in C minor\, D 703 (1820)\nMENDELSSOHN: String Quartet in E flat\, op. 12 (1829)\nMOZART: Clarinet Quintet in A\, K 581 (1789) \nPERFORMERS\nSofia Nikolaeva | clarinet\nWRE Quartet | David Milsom & Maria Nikolaeva\, violin; Charlotte Kenyon\, viola; George Kennaway\, cello

SUMMARY:Thomas Stearn: 'Where Light is a Thought' Song Cycle Premiere
DESCRIPTION:The premiere of Thomas Stearn’s ‘Where Light is a Thought’\, also featuring composition by Anna Appleby.\nThere will also be a free Rush Hour concert in the Upper Chapel earlier in the day performed by Classical Student Ensembles. Doors 5:10pm\, start time 5:30pm. \nIn this Song Cycle premiere of Thomas Stearn’s ‘Where Light is a Thought’\, five poems by Katharine Towers tell the story of a lone figure who walks from darkness into light. She leaves her home during the night and walks through woods and then onward into fields\, encountering a holly tree and a robin. As dawn arrives the world slowly appears\, each of its details acquiring colour and shape and\, in some way\, becoming real. The musical settings of the poems immerse the listener in the journey of the lone figure as she walks\, stopping at various points to observe\, listen and think. \nProgramme \nTom Stearn – Where light is a thought – Song Cycle Premiere with Teresa McKendrick (Mezzo-soprano)\, Iris Rea (Cello) and Alley Bridge-York (Harp) \nPlus performances from: \nAlley Bridge-York (Harp) & Charlie Hardwick (Cello) \nAnna Appleby – From the River – Song Cycle performed by Teresa McKendrick (Mezzo-soprano) & Yang Guo (Piano) \nFrom the River is a short song cycle woven from three poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning: \nA Musical Instrument\nHow Do I Love Thee? (Sonnets from the Portugese 43)\nGo From Me (Sonnets from the Portugese 6\nIt begins with the creation of the poet: she is plucked from the riverbed by the mischievous god Pan and is carved into an instrument\, losing her identity as one of the many reeds in the river. She falls in love\, a feeling beyond anything she has felt before\, and then loses her lover… yet keeps their heart in her own\, a second pulse. \nThe piece was commissioned by Glyndebourne for the Jerwood Young Artists recital series while Anna was resident as a composer. It was premiered by Stephanie Wake-Edwards and Matthew Fletcher on the 11th August 2019 at Glyndebourne. The original song\, ‘A Musical Instrument’ was the starting point for the cycle as it was created in July 2018 for Hull Urban Opera and Rosie Middleton. Glyndebourne commissioned the two following songs in July 2019.

SUMMARY:SYMPHONIC DANCES FOR TWO PIANOS – Tim Horton & Ivana Gavrić
DESCRIPTION:DEBUSSY En blanc et noir (16’)\nRAVEL La valse (12’)\nRACHMANINOV Symphonic Dances (30’) \nPresented by Music in the Round\, with their 2025 two-piano concert described as “piano playing at its most… visceral” (Bachtrack)\, Tim Horton and Ivana Gavrić return to the Crucible Playhouse for a concert of spellbinding and exhilarating music for two pianos. Rachmaninov’s own arrangement of his ‘Symphonic Dances’ takes centre stage\, with its arresting rhythmic passages and virtuosic energy. Debussy’s ‘En blanc et noir’\, by contrast\, sees expressionist clouds of colour conjured from the two pianos\, while Ravel’s poetic ‘La valse’ is best described by the composer himself: “Whirling clouds give glimpses\, through rifts\, of couples dancing. The clouds scatter\, little by little. One sees an immense hall peopled with a twirling crowd. The scene is gradually illuminated. The light of the chandeliers bursts forth\, fortissimo”. \nSave 20% when you book for 10 or more Music in the Round Sheffield concerts in one transaction.\nSave 10% when you book for 5 or more Music in the Round Sheffield concerts in one transaction.

SUMMARY:WRE SALON with Alice Power (2025 Prix Cortot winner)
DESCRIPTION:FRANCK: Violin Sonata (1886)\nCHOPIN: Piano Concerto no 2 (1829)\, original chamber version\nThis concert gains a special resonance from soloist\, Alice Power\, 2025 laureate of the Prix Cortot of the École Normale de Musique de Paris. Honouring Alfred Cortot—legendary pianist\, editor and teacher\, and co-founder of the École—the prize places Alice within a lineage in which Chopin and Franck are touchstones. Cortot himself studied piano in Paris with Chopin pupil Émile Decombes and is widely considered to be one of the composer’s finest interpreters\, whilst his performances of Franck with violinist Jacques Thibaud are legendary for their supple phrasing and helped cement the sonata’s place in the repertoire. This concert’s pairing mirrors Cortot’s own artistic world: the intimacy of Chopin heard at chamber scale\, and the poetic architecture of the Franco-Belgian tradition at its peak. \nChopin’s Piano Concerto no 2 in F minor appears here in the original scoring for string quintet\, a salon-scale medium Chopin himself favoured\, and one that Cortot prized for its clarity and conversational give-and-take (although he himself produced an orchestration and famously recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra and Barbirolli in 1935). In this chamber guise the concerto speaks with heightened intimacy: the strings are true partners in dialogue with the piano—exactly the sort of close-quarters eloquence that Cortot’s legacy celebrates. \nDavid Milsom—founder and artistic director of the West Riding Ensemble—is one of only a handful of global authorities on violin playing in the long 19th-century; his Romantic Violin Performing Practices: A Handbook (2020\, Boydell & Brewer) explores the topic in hands-on terms\, inviting fellow violinists to revisit practices that were trademarks of Franck’s world. \nDavid and Alice first performed together at the official launch of WRE in September 2024\, when the ensemble revelled in a shared passion for Shostakovich’s chamber music. Now they come together again to delve into another common interest with Franck’s violin sonata. \nIn keeping with the raison d’être of WRE\, the quintet line-up for this concert sees talented young students\, Maria Nikolaeva\, Perris Heath\, and Lucas Jordan\, working with seasoned musicians in a professional recital. WRE is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to give a professional platform to emerging young musicians in an ‘apprentice’ model\, and pays students a fair fee for their work. \nAlice Power | piano\nDavid Milsom | violin\nWRE Quintet | David Milsom & Maria Nikolaeva\, violin; Charlotte Kenyon\, viola; Perris Heath\, cello; Lucas Jordan\, double bass

SUMMARY:MOZART GRAN PARTITA
DESCRIPTION:ARRIEU Suite en quatre (10’)\nGOUNOD Petite symphonie (20’)\nMOZART Serenade No.10 K361 ‘Gran Partita’ (50’) \nMozart’s Serenade No.10 – immortalised in the 1984 film Amadeus – is considered one of the composer’s greatest works\, and is a masterpiece of wind writing. Nicknamed the ‘Gran Partita’ (or ‘big wind symphony’)\, it is breathtaking in its beauty. \nDescribed by English music critic Noël Goodwin as “virtually an ‘operatic’ ensemble of passionate feeling and sensuous warmth”\, the work’s emotional core is the third movement’s Adagio\, a lyrical\, intense melody that tugs at the heartstrings. \nThis Music in the Round concert is chamber music on a large scale\, with an array of oboes\, bassoons\, horns\, clarinets\, basset horns and a double bass playing one of the undisputed highlights of classical music.

SUMMARY:SOUNDS OF NOW: ÉLIANE RADIGUE FOR HARP\, VIOLIN & DOUBLE BASS
DESCRIPTION:RADIGUE\nOccam XXI (16’)\nOccam River XVIII (15’)\nOccam XVII (13’)\nOccam River XVII (16’)\nOccam (28’)\nOccam River XV (15’)\nOccam Delta XIV (17’) \nIn this special Music in the Round concert\, Welsh harpist and improvisor Rhodri Davies\, together with Angharad Davies (violin) and Dominic Lash (double bass)\, present a selection of works composed for them by Radigue. Ranging from solos to ensemble pieces\, this is a rare opportunity to explore the singular aesthetic of one of the 21st century’s most important composers\, performed by some of the musicians with whom she has most closely collaborated. Through extended instrumental techniques (the harp is played using two violin bows) and a close attention to timbre\, Radigue conjures luminescent\, intricately layered and richly textural soundscapes that slowly evolve. \nPart of: OCCAM OCEAN: THE MUSIC OF ÉLIANE RADIGUE \n“Radigue writes awesomely gradual music that is always on the move… It is music that flowers in some enchanted hinterland where sounds are sparse and mercurial\, spiritual and grounded\, narrative and abstract… she is always on the hunt for sound within sound – a realm of partials\, harmonics\, and subharmonics… the intangible cloud that makes up that note’s aura.”\nKate Molleson \nThe French composer Éliane Radigue\, now 93 years old\, has dedicated the last quarter of a century to crafting her extraordinary\, subtle and luminescent compositions for acoustic instruments. Each titled ‘Occam’ (after ‘Occam’s razor’\, the idea that the simplest solution is often the best)\, these warm and generous works explore the essence of an instrument’s sound in gradually unfolding\, richly present textures. \nFor ‘Occam Ocean’\, Music in the Round has curated a series of special events bringing together some of Radigue’s closest collaborators for two days of music and talks\, offering a rare\, immersive experience of this composer’s singular sound world. \nPresented in partnership with The University of Sheffield.
