SUMMARY:SOUNDS OF NOW: ÉLIANE RADIGUE FOR HARP\, VIOLIN & DOUBLE BASS
DESCRIPTION:RADIGUE\nOccam XXI (16’)\nOccam River XVIII (15’)\nOccam XVII (13’)\nOccam River XVII (16’)\nOccam (28’)\nOccam River XV (15’)\nOccam Delta XIV (17’) \nIn this special Music in the Round concert\, Welsh harpist and improvisor Rhodri Davies\, together with Angharad Davies (violin) and Dominic Lash (double bass)\, present a selection of works composed for them by Radigue. Ranging from solos to ensemble pieces\, this is a rare opportunity to explore the singular aesthetic of one of the 21st century’s most important composers\, performed by some of the musicians with whom she has most closely collaborated. Through extended instrumental techniques (the harp is played using two violin bows) and a close attention to timbre\, Radigue conjures luminescent\, intricately layered and richly textural soundscapes that slowly evolve. \nPart of: OCCAM OCEAN: THE MUSIC OF ÉLIANE RADIGUE \n“Radigue writes awesomely gradual music that is always on the move… It is music that flowers in some enchanted hinterland where sounds are sparse and mercurial\, spiritual and grounded\, narrative and abstract… she is always on the hunt for sound within sound – a realm of partials\, harmonics\, and subharmonics… the intangible cloud that makes up that note’s aura.”\nKate Molleson \nThe French composer Éliane Radigue\, now 93 years old\, has dedicated the last quarter of a century to crafting her extraordinary\, subtle and luminescent compositions for acoustic instruments. Each titled ‘Occam’ (after ‘Occam’s razor’\, the idea that the simplest solution is often the best)\, these warm and generous works explore the essence of an instrument’s sound in gradually unfolding\, richly present textures. \nFor ‘Occam Ocean’\, Music in the Round has curated a series of special events bringing together some of Radigue’s closest collaborators for two days of music and talks\, offering a rare\, immersive experience of this composer’s singular sound world. \nPresented in partnership with The University of Sheffield.

SUMMARY:Come and Sing with Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of our first Come and Sing event in Upper Chapel last year\, we are returning to this wonderful venue to host another. This time visitors are invited to join us in a day’s workshop featuring English Anthems. On the programme will be popular delights including Toward the Unknown Region by Vaughan Williams\, A Blest pair of Sirens and I Was Glad by Parry\, and Faire is the Heaven by Harris. With no solo performances\, choral singing will be the order of the day\, so do come along and sing your heart out! \nThe  workshop will be led by Music Director Darius Battiwalla\, who has conducted choral performances with leading orchestras including the Halle\, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata\, and prepared the Chorus for appearances at the Proms and for recordings with the BBC Philharmonic for Chandos. He has worked regularly as guest chorusmaster or conductor with many other choirs including the Northern Sinfonia Chorus\, Leeds Philharmonic Chorus\, Huddersfield Choral Society\, CBSO chorus and Netherlands Radio Choir.  Darius is Leeds City Organist and has appeared as organ soloist with the Halle\, London Philharmonic Orchestras and the BBC Philharmonic\, and he gives regular chamber concerts with members of the Manchester orchestras on piano and harpsichord. Despite this impressive record he is a very friendly conductor\, encouragingly supportive and challenging in equal measure – qualities that were much in evidence on the very successful day he led last year. \nThe day will begin at 10.30 with registration from 10am\, with the morning session running to 12.30 including a break for tea or coffee and cake (included in the admission price).  We will re-commence at 2pm\, giving time for participants to have lunch in one of the many varied eateries  in the city centre. The afternoon session will run until 4.30pm\, with another generous break for tea in town\, until the performance for family and friends at 6pm. \nScores will be provided for those who don’t have their own; any version is acceptable so do bring your own if you feel comfortable with it. \nThe short performance from 6pm is free to family and friends; numbers limited. \nInformation about joining the Chorus will be available on the day; see https://sheffieldphil.org/membership-join/new-members/ \nTickets are £25 for visiting singers\, available online (see link below); these include score and refreshments. NB. There won’t be much note-bashing\, so prior knowledge of the pieces or a reasonable ability to read music will help participants make the most of the day. \nTickets for the performance are FREE\, but tickets will be required as our Chorus is a large one (we expect around 100 of us to be there) so space is limited.

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL WEEKEND 2025 – Waldershelf Singers
DESCRIPTION:Waldershelf Singers invite you to a concert featuring a programme of traditional sea shanties – the songs sung by sailors to help them co-ordinate their movements and keep time while performing tasks on ships\, and a way of relieving the monotony of these repetitive tasks. \nA Drop of Nelson’s Blood – refers to the rum that Nelson’s body was said to be preserved in after his death after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805\, so it could be transported back to Britain – this is not verified! \nLet us transport you from land-locked Sheffield to a different life – a life as a member of a ship’s crew and a sea-faring community. \nWaldershelf Singers is an independent mixed voice community choir. The choir has been in existence since 1962 and we aim to continually evolve – new members are always welcome! We sing everything from pop to classics\, contemporary film and musical theatre\, gospel and spiritual. \n  \n

Our repertoire of mainly Spanish-language songs covers many styles and moods\, and embraces works from the Renaissance to the present day\, from Iberia and the Americas. We regularly perform at music festivals locally\, and also at events such as benefit concerts and parties. \nSinsontes\, with guitar soloist and accompanist\, Catherine Carr. \nOjos brujos  (Cuba) Gonzalo Roig.  Arranged by Electo Silva. \nI’m utterly bewitched by a pair of eyes\, my heart and soul stolen away\, drowning in a sapphire sea. \nPor una cabeza  (Argentina) Alfredo Le Pera/Carlos Gardel. Arranged by Bay Whitaker. \nEvery time I back a dead cert at the races\, or I reckon I’m set up for a romantic evening\, it all goes pear-shaped. The lady gives me the cold shoulder\, the horse is pipped at the post. Every damned time. Dames\, nags – what’s the point? \nSun sun paloma (Cuba)  Alejandro Rodríguez. Arranged by Electo Silva. \nLittle dove\, take me to your nest\, I’m in love with your beautiful colours. When I see you nestling\, I want you to kiss me. With your coral beak and ivory white feathers\, you thrill me as you fly. \nQue tinguem sort (Catalonia) Lluis Llach. \nIf this is goodbye\, let it be a fine\, clear day with beautiful bird song. Be lucky\, and I hope you find in someone else what I couldn’t give you. But if you stay\, don’t expect an easy path\, a bed of roses. Let’s just hope for the blessing of a long life. \nEl Arroyo que murmura  (Cuba) Jorge Anckermann. Arranged by Electo Silva. \nThe silvery moon’s beams are reflected in a murmuring brook\, while the birds forage in the undergrowth\, silently patrol above the fields or – like the sinsonte – sing joyfully. \nDu Haut du Balcon. (Canada) Olivier Demers. \nGuitar solo. \nCon el viento. (Spain) Anon. \nThe sea breeze lulled me to sleep\, there in the sand dunes\, the rhythmic waves lapping the stars; I fell asleep\, beneath the stars\, among the rustling reeds. \nPrado verde y florido. (Spain) Francisco Guerrero. \nOh\, I wish that the verdant\, shady landscape\, the cool\, clear spring\, the flower-filled meadows\, the gentle breeze\, could prevail on my beloved shepherdess: soften her stony heart\, and relieve my ardent suffering… \nDe Cuba para la Habana  (Cuba) Anon. Arranged by Electo Silva. \nOn the road from Santiago de Cuba to Havana I encountered the most beautiful young woman. Surely\, just down from the mountains\, I thought. “No\, from that little shack\, right over there by the sugar plantation”\, she answered. “Come\, my lovely…” \nDulce embeleso  (Cuba) Miguel Matamoros. Arranged by Electo Silva. \nThe enchanting memory of your sweet kiss fills my daydreaming mind\, with lingering\, aching sadness. \nGracias a la vida (Chile) Violeta Parra. Arranged by Electo Silva. \nI am so grateful to life\, that has given me so much: the senses\, limbs and faculties to perceive\, enjoy and understand the world\, as I pass through its many scenes; a heart and soul to love and be loved\, sorrow and laughter; the gift of language\, and a voice that is mine\, and everyone’s.

SUMMARY:CLASSICAL WEEKEND 2025 – Trio 240: Music for Piano\, Violin and Cello
DESCRIPTION:Our programme takes inspiration from two pianists – Jane Austen and Clara Schumann – and explores the different roles music played in their lives. \nThe first part will be a selection of pieces by composers featured in Jane Austen’s music collection\, including some which were copied out by JA herself. This was a time when for women\, playing the piano was ‘an innocent diversion’ and they would have played primarily in the home. Jane Austen took great delight in her daily practice and was always ready to play lively dance music to amuse her relations. \nThe second part of our concert will be Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio. Clara Schumann was born just two years after Jane Austen’s death\, and went on to be one of the greatest concert pianists of her era. \nLucy and Jonny have been performing as a duo since 2017 and they are passionate about introducing their audiences to lesserknown works. Past performances as a duo include at Classical Sheffield’s Classical Weekend 2019 and in Annabelle Lawson’s in:spire concert series. In January 2020 they performed the inaugural concert of the Sounds of the City concert series in St Matthew’s Church\, Carver Street. Between 2018 and 2021 they had a regular Sundayafternoon concert series at Fulwood Old Chapel\, Sheffield. \nIn 2019 the couple embarked on a new project with the Friends of Greenhill Library when they led a “Music for Kids” day. They performed original incidental music\, composed by Jonny\, to illustrate the stories of Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. They also ran sessions introducing their instruments to young children. They have continued to develop this work\, including three more music days in Greenhill and assemblies in several schools in Sheffield. \nAndrew Marples is well known in the Derbyshire area as a conductor\, accompanist and concert-promoter. He studied music at Reading University and piano accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music in London. He is currently Musical Director of Baslow Choir\, Holymoorside Choral Society\, Cantiamo and MusicWork Vocal Ensemble. He retired as MD of Chesterfield Gilbert & Sullivan Society in 2020 after 20 years of service. He has worked with Sheffield City Opera\, Present Company\, Matlock Operatic Society\, Rotherham Choral Society and the Bakewell Arts Festival. He has conducted many shows including Oliver\, Gigi\, Oklahoma\, all the Gilbert & Sullivan shows\, The Elixir of Love\, The Merry Widow\, Viva Mexico and Joseph. He has appeared at Chatsworth House several times with Chatsworth Players (as Musical Director for ‘Into the Woods’ and ‘My Fair Lady’)\, Haddon Hall\, The Lyceum & Crucible Theatres in Sheffield\, Pomegranate Theatre and Crooked Spire Church (Chesterfield)\, Buxton Opera House\, York Minster\, Lincoln Cathedral\, Southwell Minster and in several European venues. In his leisure time he can be found cheering on Chesterfield F.C. at the SMH Group Stadium!
