SUMMARY:Protest Notes
DESCRIPTION:Music has long been a voice for resistance\, remembrance and renewal. In this striking and emotionally charged programme\, the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra explores how composers have responded to injustice\, conflict\, and the call for change. \nThey open with Sibelius’s Finlandia — a defiant musical cry for independence and national identity\, written under the shadow of Russian censorship. Then comes Ethel Smyth’s March of the Women\, a rousing anthem of the suffragette movement celebrating women’s fight for equality\, newly arranged for orchestra by Zoë Birtwhistle. \nAmerican composer Margaret Bonds channels the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in her deeply moving Montgomery Variations\, reflecting on pivotal moments of the civil rights movement. Prokofiev’s final symphony (Symphony No. 7 in C# minor)\, meanwhile\, balances tenderness and irony in a work often seen as his quiet protest against artistic repression in Stalinist Russia. \nThe evening closes with Pēteris Vasks’ The Fruit of Silence – a meditative\, spiritual work inspired by the words of Mother Teresa\, offering a moment of reflection amid the unrest. \nThe fruit of silence is prayer.\nThe fruit of prayer is faith.\nThe fruit of faith is love.\nThe fruit of love is service.\nThe fruit of service is peace. \nThis concert offers a rich\, powerful journey through music that dares to speak out.

SUMMARY:The Winning of Barbara Worth – Film with Live Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Silent film. Live orchestra. Experience the wild west as you’ve never heard it before. \nThe Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra presents something entirely new – and thrilling – for its 80th season: a live performance of the sweeping new score to the 1926 silent epic The Winning of Barbara Worth by composer Neil Brand\, performed alongside a screening of the original film. \nStarring Hollywood legends Ronald Colman\, Vilma Bánky\, and a young Gary Cooper in his breakthrough role\, this romantic Western is a story of ambition\, love\, and survival set against the stark beauty of the California desert.  At its heart is a breathtaking\, edge-of-your-seat flood sequence – a landmark in early cinema – brought to life with the full force of the orchestra live on stage. \nExpect soaring melodies\, dramatic tension\, and the magic of classic cinema as you’ve never experienced it before.  Whether you’re a film buff\, a music lover\, or just looking for something totally different –this will be a unique night out at the movies complete with a live symphonic twist. \n  \nNote: Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled or rescheduled. However\, you do have the option to resell since we do not require names for entry\, or transfer your tickets to a future event. \n  \nMusic by Neil Brand.  Music commissioned and premièred by Le Giornate del Cinema Muto\, Pordenone. Performed by arrangement with Faber Music\, London.

SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky\, Howard and Howell
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra as it launches its 80th annual concert series with a vibrant and thrilling programme of music. \nThe concert will open with Dorothy Howell’s last large-scale orchestral work Three Divertissements. Originally written for the 1940 Proms but shelved due to wartime cancellations\, Three Divertissements has remained largely unheard until recent years. This lively and colourful suite is a brilliant rediscovery by a British composer whose music is finally being brought back to the spotlight. \nDani Howard’s Trombone Concerto is a powerful and uplifting response to the challenges of 2020\, written during lockdown as a celebration of human resilience and connection. Across three vivid movements – from quiet introspection to joyful\, high-energy celebration – the solo trombone takes on the role of an individual navigating a complex world\, ultimately emerging with hope and purpose. Expect dazzling virtuosity from soloist Blair Sinclair\, Principal Trombone of Opera North. \nFinally\, immerse yourself in the sweeping drama and rich romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor – a symphonic journey through fate\, passion\, and triumph. This is Tchaikovsky at his most emotionally compelling. \nCelebrate this milestone season with us and experience a night of powerful live music\, unforgettable melodies\, and virtuosic performance.

ORGANIZER;CN="Sheffield Symphony Orchestra":MAILTO:For Potential Players The SSO takes pride in the friendliness and supportive attitude between players. We believe this is why members have such long-standing loyalty and commitment to the orchestra. However, our membership does need to remain large enough to present the extensive repertoire we offer. In particular, we are looking to recruit more string players, especially violin and viola players of all ages. If you are interested, you can come along to a mutual trial period to see if it feels right. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from early September to late June, except during school holidays. To develop our orchestral sound, we plan to have day schools this season. This will be combined with social occasions to foster the orchestral camaraderie. We play to a high standard so players are expected to be a minimum level of grade 7 and usually around grade 8 or above. If the SSO’s description seems to match what you are looking for and you are curious, don’t hesitate to contact us via the website or Facebook, tweet us on Twitter, or call 07901 566960 to find out more.

SUMMARY:'A Mirror on History' with Sheffield Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:A concert of music bound to its cultural and historical surroundings. \nJoin the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra for one of our most epic performances yet.
