Brigantes Bach to Britten

BRITTEN Sinfonietta Op. 1
BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D
BACH Triple Concerto BWV1044
STRAVINSKY Dumbarton Oaks Concerto
Alice Power (Piano), Laura Jellicoe (Flute), David Milsom (Violin)
Step into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas – beautiful melodies, vivid storytelling, nature, memory and national character – have been reimagined again and again.
Imagine composers in the first decades of the 1900s revisiting the music of JS Bach, what might they have written? Well, Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks Concerto is, in all but name, another Brandenburg Concerto, but with a distinctly modern voice. Each piece in this programme, the Britten Sinfonietta, the Stravinsky, and two pieces by Bach, exploit small forces and make soloists of the orchestral musicians.
