Arvo Pärt’s haunting tribute to Benjamin Britten takes us to 1977 and opens a programme shaped by reflection and remembrance. Britten, Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams offer very different responses to conflict – sometimes questioning, sometimes hopeful – showing how composers use music to process the world around them.
